What are your favorite news sources?

DU used to have a column on the side with a list of democratic and liberal friendly websites and news sources, but sadly that is no more. I have been using alternet.org, dailykos.com, motherjones.com, crooksandliars.com, thinkprogress.org and rawstory as my main sources, but I like to look around and not be stuck to the same.

I have just dropped rawstory. Too many times wicked websites have come up that warn "You are already infected." That sort of thing. For those who do not know, a website that does not let you leave and tries to control your browser is evil. Do not ever trust their warnings, advice, ads or anything else about them. While rawstory does not itself cause problems, they have enabled ads to have a bit more power to autorun and autoplay than is wise and they have no effective filter on their ads. I am sad to say goodby to them, but I really don't want my computer infected.

If any of you have a list or suggestion of websites that you trust to give good data and not spill toxic attacks on your computer, please post them for us to share.

Yet, after removing Rawstory from my list, I have found quite a few advantages.
There is a firefox app called lightbeam that can be useful in identifying issue. If you clear the data on lightbeam and open a website you can see how many other websites are connected to when you go to a website. If you clear the data after you have connected you can watch and see how many websites update and continue being linked into your experience. It is rather eye opening.

7. While some are clickbait, others rehashed from a year earlier, RS is one of the best aggregators.

It's a nice quick reference that combs dozens of other news sites to pull in reports.

As some here complain, and I partially agree upon--many of them are just lifted from other sites, some are poorly summarized and others have attention grabbing headlines and ledes, which might count as click bait--but they offer a quite comprehensive list of pertinent topics without having to search multiple websites. If you want more detail, you can always click on the cited source.

RS is one of my top reference sites, for just that purpose.

12. Major newspapers. WA Post, NYTimes, LATimes, Boston Globe, Seattle Times,etc.

Also, if there is a topic and I want to see a number of articles on it, I either go to news.google.com or I go to google, type in the subject, and after the page opens, choose "news" from the bar at the top. For some reason there's often a different selection of choices.

17. Using Lightbeam to analyze a few websites

This is a list of how many third party websites came up when I went to each of these websites.

This number does not directly indicate that a website is wicked. It does however relate to how complex the relationships and connections to other websites are. The webmasters for DU have a much simpler task when trying to track a third party problem than many much simpler websites do. Their connection list is simple enough to try and keep control of things.

As you increase the third party connections things will become more complex. A large number of third party connections may indicate a large effort to monetize every possible element that someone will pay for. A large number of analytic connections does mean that your responses and data are being sold to a large number of people. In turn, this helps feed corporate big brother.

While I am repeating over and over that a large number of third party connections does not directly indicate problematic behavior, I will say that it is at the very least a strong sign of potential danger.
