he's a caricature of a guilty man trying desperately to avoid responsibility and hoping we won't notice that he's acting absolutely nothing like an innocent person would ever act.

imagine, just for moment, that he's actually completely innocent of everything. if so, you'd be struggling to come up with an explanation for his actions. what innocent person in his right mind would behave like he does?

but a spare tire and a jack and some jumper cables. Really. There's no reason to look in the trunk. Nobody has ever looked in the trunk!"

"So why can't I look in the trunk if there's nothing important in there?"

"Because it's my trunk and, and, there's no reason to look in it because there's nothing there."

"So there's no reason why I can't look."

"Yes, there is, because you're mean and nosy and you want to look in my trunk."

"Is there a dead body in there? Your car smells kind of bad, even from a distance..."

"A body? No, of course not! No body! No body!"

"So why won't you open the trunk and show me that there isn't a body in it?"

"Because there isn't a body in it. No body!"

"So why does your car smell like rotting meat?"

"It doesn't!"

"Yes, it does."

"Well, maybe I forgot to take some groceries out of the trunk. But not a body."

"If it's just groceries that have gone bad why don't we open the trunk and take them out?"

"Because there isn't a body in the trunk. No body! No body!"

...has anyone on any of the Sunday morning political talk shows ever said anything like what you just posted? I gave up on those shows because it seemed that no one ever seemed ready to say any of this. If anyone ever said it I missed it.

My impression is that the only ones who come close are "obviously liberal" shows like rachel Maddow or Samantha bee.

and how much time and effort he spent trying to stop it/find out what was going on.

It seemed like everyday he was hounding someone, talking to someone about it.

I agree, it was his "overriding consciousness of guilt". I can't think of any other reason for his obsession.
