"SNIP.....

(CNN) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday denied a request from House Democrats for access to six years of President Donald Trump'spersonal tax returns.

"I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee's request," Mnuchin wrote in his one-page letter, written in consultation with lawyers from the Department of Justice.

Mnuchin added that the Department of Justice would issue a formal legal opinion.

The denial comes after two missed deadlines by the Treasury secretary, who has previously called the request by House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal under an obscure statute of tax law "unprecedented," arguing it raised "serious constitutional issues" that could have dire consequences for taxpayer privacy.

Once that door is opened, the cons could make good on their old threats to prosecute and imprison progressive state officials who support immigrant sanctuary policies.

We might have more to lose than gain

Technically both sanctuary immigration policies and marijuana decriminalization go in the face of federal law. It opens a gray area through which a lot of state level Democrats could be persecuted if the gloves came off.

The better, safer play is to use this as election ammunition

The statute says "shall," but who cares?

And why, exactly, is Trump moving heaven and earth to prevent the release of his tax returns?

I'm very sure that he'd release them (and an unredacted version of the Mueller report), there'd be a huge media photo op with Republicans all standing behind him patting his back and smiling like the cat that got the cream and he'd proudly have Fox News showing slides of it ALL 24/7.

This is not how an innocent & honest person and zero to hide behaves.
