At least a conservative in British political standards. Our conservatives here in the US have shifted to the point that they line up more with the fringe elements in European politics.

Shapiro is also using a standard tactic from the new right. They label anything that does not comport to their own arguments as being "left". To him and his ilk being called "left" is an immediate disqualification. Instead of defending his views and answering the question, he cries about bias.

Actually Ben, there is a media bias and that bias is toward what brings viewers. Another reality is that the "facts" or evidence is what journalists try to uncover. Neil was asking Shapiro about his statements, about the laws recently passed in Georgia which Shapiro has stated very clearly, that he supports, and basically asking how that could be what passes for conservatism now in the US. Shapiro had no good answer so he created a massive ad hominem attack on Neil.

The channel Innuendo Studio on YouTube has a really good series called "The Alt-Right Playbook" in which they breakdown how the new right wing personalities are influencing the political discussion.

Pundits are so used to having their views echoed back to them in interviews — or only challenged by people who don’t know what they are talking about — that they can’t handle a robust interrogation.

Britain may have its problems, but Cockburn thinks America could learn from our colonial cousins when it comes to debating the news on television.

...Ben Shapiro, is about as interesting as .....well....an out of place, curly pubic hair. It's a novelty when you first find it, stuck really high on the shower stall wall and you wonder how it got there and it's a bit fascinating at first. That shows the big difference between British media and rhetorical debate while substantially deflating Shapiro's claims -- common among the contemporary American right -- that American media is all speaking in a "monolithic" voice for the left. If anything, it shows what a pretension much of American for-profit news actually is.

Neil concisely explained his journalistic responsibility then demonstrated a style of examination familiar to anyone who watches BBC regularly. It pales compared to the rousing verbal exercises of British Parliament, something that makes American Congress look like nap time at the local day care center.

The fact Shapiro was so easily stirred to anger -- so rattled and rustled he goes straight for the ad hominem attack -- shows he isn't used to these calm and incisive dissections from American talking heads. Yet, if they are so stacked against him, if they are the force majeure he and his crypto-fascist colleagues contend, then why isn't he used to this?

Because what passes for television news in the United States is a defanged beast, broken and quelled by the need for sensationalism over qualitative and contemplative analysis. As noted in the video, it's the bucks that drives American news media and you get that through shouting matches and echo chambers.

He claims that only the orthodox Jews (as he proclaims himself to be) are real Jews and that the rest of us should turn in our badges. [Badges? We don’t need any stinking badges!] Speaking of badges, the Nazis gave us all badges (yellow Stars of David) and numbers. During the Middle ages various European rulers gave us badges, too. Would our ancestors been able to turn in those badges?

Mr. Shapiro is hung up on outward appearances of piety and not on the ethics of Judaism. I would urge Mr. Shapiro to read the Haftorah for Yom Kippur (Isaiah 57:14-58:14) and reflect on that a bit.

I would also suggest that Mr. Shapiro review rabbinical opinion on abortion. He would find that abortion is permitted whenever the mother’s life or her family may be endangered by the pregnancy and that abortion is permitted until the fetus is viable outside the uterus. Note that endangerment of life can include starvation, inability to care for her other children, or any condition that could lead to a significant decline in health.

For whatever it is worth, most Jews in America are liberals and vote that way. Why? I like to think that it is because we remember being discriminated against, losing our rights, our livelihoods, and our lives. We are reminded of that every Passover Seder and every Yom HaShoah.
