When .. Trump invites historical comparisons, it is usually to his detriment. This is the risk of being .. more corrupt .. and .. less articulate than .. Harding (whose rhetoric reminded H.L. Mencken of a string of wet sponges and stale bean soup).
... the .. snubbing of .. Tubman in favor of extending .. Jacksons run.. on the $20 bill is .. revealing ... for who is being kept on the money not only the proud owner of slaves, but also the political author of a vicious white mans populism. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump called the proposed replacement of Jackson pure political correctness. Actually, the switch would be an example of sound moral judgment. Jacksons defining cause was the ethnic cleansing of Native American lands to make way for more slavery-based agriculture. In pursuit of his pale-faced vision of democracy, Jackson was imperious, violent and indifferent to constitutional norms. Late at night, if Trump speaks to the portrait of Jackson he has hung on the wall of the Oval Office .. the two .. would find much in common ...
... Tubman may have been illiterate, but she was justly celebrated for her fearlessness and sense of calling. White supremacists attempted to create an image of black inferiority, passivity and helplessness. Tubman was bold, calm under pressure and organizationally gifted ...
The work of Tubman and other conductors was .. a demonstration of African American agency in the defeat of slavery. Contrary to accounts that exaggerated the role of whites, the Underground Railroad was mainly manned and funded by free blacks in the North (and Canada). Black women contributed money to support Tubmans raids. Black churches hid fleeing refugees. Black vigilance committees in the North met slave hunters with physical resistance ...

(35,454 posts)She later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the United States Army. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the struggle for women's suffrage.

(83,785 posts)"Escaping slavery; risking everything to save her family; leading a military raid; championing the cause of womens suffrage; these are just a handful of the accomplishments of one of Americas most courageous heroes."

The use of a daisy flower:
Daisy has the meaning of childbirth, it also represents new beginning, innocent or purity.
We see a new born Harriet blooming out from a daisy in the beginning shot.
When we talk about Harriet's aging and death, we see the flower wilting, petals falling onto the ground.
A new daisy buds bloom out from the ground as we hear Harriet's final words:
"I go away to prepare a place for you".

(118,290 posts)took me to the Wildlife Refuge years ago and pointed out a small building some distance off the road, which he said was owned by a hunting club but rumored to be a house where Tubman had lived. The hunting club didn't want to lose the property and denied it had any connection to Tubman. He's been gone a while now, and was my last relative in those parts, so I'm not sure what finally happened

(90,705 posts)What I just looked up on google accords with my memory of that bio I read as a child.
It caused her to have epileptic seizures and debilitating headaches, as well as other problems that grew worse as she aged. One of the anecdotes from the book I read was that she fell ill while conducting a group of escaping slaves, and they just gathered round her until she was able to go on.
Unbelievable courage and endurance!

(90,705 posts)It was my first introduction to this American hero, this truly great woman.
All these years later I was looking forward to seeing her replace Jackson. Trump is nothing but a racist misogynistic orange pissant not fit to wipe Harriet Tubman's shoes.
