WP opinion: Trump has messed with the wrong woman.

When President Trump invites historical comparisons, it is usually to his detriment. This is the risk of being even more corrupt than Warren G. Harding and even less articulate than, well, Warren G. Harding (whose rhetoric reminded H.L. Mencken of “a string of wet sponges” and “stale bean soup”).

Even so, the Trump administration’s recent snubbing of Harriet Tubman in favor of extending Andrew Jackson’s run as the face on the $20 bill is particularly revealing and especially damning.

I heard Manuchin say it was because of ''counterfeit'' concerns. So it will take till 2028 to happen? Really, 8 years?

It is revealing for who is being kept on the money — not only the proud owner of slaves, but also the political author of a vicious white man’s populism. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump called the proposed replacement of Jackson “pure political correctness.” Actually, the switch would be an example of sound moral judgment.

NY Mag: But the New York Times reported a second basis for keeping Jackson on the $20: “Mr. Mnuchin, concerned that the president might create an uproar by canceling the new bill altogether, was eager to delay its redesign until Mr. Trump was out of office, some senior Treasury Department officials have said.”

I remember when we talked about the underground railroad in grade school, it was especially appealing to a child's sense of adventure and admiration of bravery. Mnuchin claims "counterfeiting concerns" but it is so obvious that the Trump crowd fears how the base would react if they saw this black woman on their money. And the base probably feels in-on-the-joke, thinking they are putting one over on the "libtards". They don't realize as they revel in the subterfuge that it is a boldfaced indication of just how unpopular their agenda is and always will be. Compare the profound courage required of an oppressed people to risk their lives in the cause of freedom against the cowardice of an administration that holds all kinds of power yet sneaks around with pretexts to please their constituants.
