I have no doubt the Robert Mueller believes he is "doing the right thing."
In another era, this would have been true. He's a good man who believes in human decency and he always plays by the rules. He's an extraordinarily intelligent man who insists on clinging to his world view.
I admire his integrity. And I can't understand why he doesn't see that his personal values are allowing "evil" to triumph.
Speaking up, in plain, unmistakable terms, may have been what was needed to break the hold of Trump's Kool Aid servants. I have no idea whether or not Mueller saw this, understood it, or decided to stand by his principals no matter what.
Depending on where America goes from here will determine Mueller's biography in future history. It may turn out that the historic lesson is that decent people always stand by their values. Or that historic lesson may be that, when faced with "evil," do what is necessary to defeat it.

I also think what he found truly disturbed him, but he did not want to be seen as the guy leading the charge because that would somehow cast a shadow over his findings.
