Our leaders need to ask themselves: Is this a guy we can "work across the aisle" with? Have unity with?

(43,422 posts)provided they hold the Senate in 2022 as well. Unless we nominated a hand-picked (by them) RWer, I do not see a Rethug Senate ever again voting nor certainly approving a Dem nominee. The lines are drawn.
We need to add PR, DC as new states, and split California into 2. 6 new Dem Senators. It is the only way to fix the Senate, which in a decade and half or so will have 30% of the population controlling 70% of the seats. A 30% that is far more reactionary RW, rural, less educated, more fundie, whiter, and older than the other 70%.
The Rethugs are going for a perpetual lock-down of power through systemic voter suppression, census manipulations, gerrymandering, court (all all levels) manipulation/RW stacking, and gaming out the EC/House of Representatives, and that Senate demographic figure.
They will get to a point where their courts will approve truly batshit insane RW rollbacks of most civil rights and an implementation of a theocracy/robber baron corrupt combo of fascism backed up by overt appeals to pure racism/white nationalism. This will all be aided and passed down intergenerationally with the aid of the insidious RW media embedded in the body politic like bloated ticks of hate and greed.
At the end of the day, unless there are massive systemic overhauls (and massive systemic overhauls are not on the cards for either party's centres of power, as the RW already is getting their way, and our centrists/moderates (who are the biggest block in the Democratic Party now), by their very nature, will not align with radical and/or massive revisions) the US will break up, probably by 2040 to 2050 at the latest, as the Blue states will never submit to a Gilead-lite style of federal government.

(37,648 posts)if he's sure the Republicans will appoint to replace him. I don't see him passing away, since he's not even the average life span yet, and I'm sure he has the best health care and let's face it, a cushy stress-free job and life. What we don't know is how he eats and takes care of himself.

(37,648 posts)That's why they rarely leave. Kennedy left because Trump paid him off enough to make it worth his while to give it all up. By some deal involving Kennedy's son or something.
