I just can't get it out of my head.
Back in 2016, Steve Kornacki was constantly in front of that moving board that he swished with his hand to show us why it was impossible for Donald Trump to win.
Yeah, I know, everyone else was also wrong.
But Steve, with that swishing fucking board, explained to us in detail how there was virtually no route for a Trump victory. And we believed him. And on election night, there were probably a record number of heart attacks and strokes throughout the sane world.
And before this last midterm election, the board was back. You think he would have burned the fucking thing.
So screw all the polls, the rigged ones, and the ones that think they have it right.
But there is one exception. The Quinniapac poll, put out by a small university in Connecticut, seems to be the closest to reality most of the time.
With that one exception, screw all the rest of the polls. I take them as seriously as a Ouija board.

(38,958 posts)are tied at the hip. It is about "The Horse Race" Doesn't matter who is up or who is down or sideways or made a gaff or just entered the race or just dropped out or it's rainy in Iowa or snowing in Miami. It is just all Infotainment to keep your eyes on the screen until the next ad for a drug you never knew you needed comes around.
I would turn off the Breathless 24/7 Breaking News, Cable Noise Infotainment and not look back.

(32,656 posts)They were ALL saying or thinking the same thing - Chump had no chance of winning. And yet, here we are getting ready for the next election. Is our election process any more secure now than it was in 2016?
Apparently not.

(6,974 posts)No he wasn't, but friends who force themselves to watch him say he does NOTHING in ever mentioning how the Russians interferred into our elections which as we see NOW COST Hillary the presicency even though she did win it. They tell me that he also never mentions how thuglicans voter-suppressed the hell out of Dems in Pa, Wis. and especially in Michigan where voter-purging was used to great advantage for thuglicans. I don't know HOW they can watch him.

(25,472 posts)538 had Trump with a 30% chance of winning. They also had it trending toward Trump for a while before the election.
30% and "impossible" are two very different things. Kornacki may have believed it to be impossible, but he wasn't basing that opinion on all of the available information.
Part of the problem, in this particular case, is that polls can only provide a snapshot of a particular moment in time. They're not much good if there's a last-minute or election-day shift in voter preferences.

(8,679 posts)It was just enough time to ferment but not long enough to forget. Which made it close enough for the Russia effect and other factors (Stein, Sarandon, BOBs, etc.) to sway the election. Damn shame all the way around.

(6,974 posts)About the Russians, who are still interferring, and who knows what they'll do for an encore in the 2020 GE. That's if tRump allows there to be a General Election. I get so sick and tired of folks who don't want to speak about Russian interferrernce. They keep saying that Hillary lost to tRump beasue she was a bad candidate. What the hell was tRump, a good one? There's a whole lot of filling in I wished folks would do before they state that fact about Hillary losing to tRump which she really didn't do. She won the 2020 presicency, but it was stolen from her by tRump and his tRumpthuglicans with a huge assisbt by putin/russia.

(94,609 posts)If you disavow all polling, you remove a set of generally useful data points. I'll accept that they learned their lessons and are refining their analytical approach.
FWIW - the last Quinnipiac poll in 2016 had Clinton +7 over Trump.
