And, really, I can't think of anything more insulting to the memories of those who died, giving their lives to save the world from ruin, than to be 'lauded' by a cowardly, yellow bellied draft dodger.

(102,286 posts)for those guys in their 90s who are being honored. I can not put into words how I feel about Trump but from the very opposite end of the spectrum I feel incredible pride for those men (and the women whose accomplishments behind the scenes were likewise instrumental, including the women spies of the Resistance, the residents of Normandy and nearby who helped the troops, the nurses waiting to help to heal and make their survival to this day possible and so many others).

(26,266 posts)IMHO, of course. If I see a transcript, I'll read it. I just won't listen to him regurgitating words, just because it's expected of him. He has no worldly idea with sacrifice even is.

(102,286 posts)It appears they must have brought in consultants or farmed it out. Clearly someone beyond his regular circle wrote it--someone who appeared to give a damn.

(3,355 posts)He is READING WORDS and that is all he's doing. I had to turn off Morning Joe, where they were complimenting him for "his" speech - including Senator Angus King saying it made him optimistic!! Totally bizarre!!

(26,266 posts)What trump* knows about WW ll history is probably limited to what he read that speech.
And the journalists need to go back and read The Emperors New Clothes and stop the pretense. People arent stupid.

(453 posts)They praise him for showing great humility in not making the speech about himself.
We all know those words are not his own. He probably read them for about the third time making sure he read the big words as he ad been instructed. You most of them were a vocabulary lesson for him.
I really feel remorse, having loss three men from my immediate family in that war, that this man is even allowed to read those words and stand in the presence of those remaining vets. It seems to be so unjust to me that wanna-be fascist is delivering this message.

(26,266 posts)Two remained stateside. Of the other three, one uncle fought in the Battle of the Bulge and one was ship board in the Pacific. He was on the USS Sagamon and the USS Santee. Both ships were hit, while he was on board. Even my uncle who was the flight instructor, in England, was involved in cleaning the aftermath of battles.
I can just imagine what they'd think of what's going on in this country, today.

(7,153 posts)He looked like he kept dozing off during Macron's speech.
To be semi-fair, this is a 70+ year old who has been globetrotting over the past two weeks.
BUT- earlier, the French broadcast of the ceremonies showed Thump with crossed arms during the early part of Macron's speech.

(14,492 posts)And I won't use the words embarrassed or shamed because he's not capable of those emotions.
tRump's uncomfortable because:
* he's being forced to act as if he's humble and grateful (totally against his grain),
* he's being forced to participate in a ceremony that's about respect, honor, and unselfish service (totally against his grain),
* he's surround by older and superior males that shine the worst of light on his personal history, and
* the whole show is not about tRump and he has no control over it.

Easy to believe tweaking his vanity once enabled the unmourned departed to get him to watch a few minutes, but we know what he watches all the time is video of what he imagines are his own great moments, over and over.

Surely somebody else wrote the speech and he did his usual preparation, meaning nothing.

(15,286 posts)from a teleprompter. You can tell he's not the least bit invested or interested in the speech, it's just a script he has to read. Compare that to his interview with Ingraham right before, he's animated answering her questions.
