A Japanese government minister has sparked controversy by saying that it is "socially accepted" that women be forced to wear high heels in the workplace.
This photo taken on April 7, 2016 shows the Japan High Heel Association managing director "Madame" Yumiko giving a lesson on high heels in Tokyo

(39,343 posts)Suits, ties, high heels, and other uncomfortable work clothes are insane and counterproductive.
When I rule the planet, everyone will appreciate their issued cargo shorts (or pant, depending on climate), flip flops, and tees.

(1,480 posts)but I would no more wear the attire you suggest than the ones you are against.
Jeans and T-shirts work just fine.

(23,102 posts)So glad I didn't live in Japan when I was working! I did love heels when I was young, but my bad back got worse and by the time I was 50 I couldn't wear anything over 1-1/2". So for 17 years I wore flats or short heels/platforms to work and would have been in huge trouble if I had to wear 3" heels - would have had to quit. I managed 3 departments and we had a "professional" dress code so it would not be acceptable for me to wear any type of sports shoe. I wonder if they make accommodations for women with feet or back problems who can't wear high heels?

(1,480 posts)the offices were being recabled for a new LAN. The floors were made up of removeable panels--much like a drop ceiling. One of the women tripped and hurt herself when she fell into an open space in the floor. The company refused to honor her medical bills because they blamed her accident on the fact she was wearing heels.
If I had been her, I would've started coming to work barefoot.
