So my partner was doing life insurance stuff a couple of weeks ago and he wanted me to be the beneficiary. It was no problem.
However, when he had to check the box of what my relation is to him, he had to check "Other". I've been with him for nearly 14 years, and legally I'm still only known as "Other".
This is the kind of shit LGBT people like us deal with a lot. I mean we laughed it off and made jokes, but it does sting.
It's this every day stuff that really bothers me about not being able to be married to him, not the damn ceremony.

(23,156 posts)a 26 year old niece. She's straight, and was saying she sees absolutely no point in ever getting married, not even if she has children some day. I pointed out some of the legal benefits that come with legal marriage. She needs to talk to more people in the LGBT community to get it.
Not that everyone needs to marry, but there are very good reasons to do so, if that's what you want to do. And should be able to.
