Phone rings. You pick it up and say hello.
"Do not hang up the phone!"
I hang up the phone. I have no idea what the call is about, because I hang up immediately. I get that call at least once a day, always from a spoofed local number.

(34,661 posts)Verizon just implemented the kill switch yesterday with these Robo's in our market area.
Two days ago, don't hang up please! Like you a spoofed out state number. Belonged to Frontier Communications. Just had to call back to see what the heck they were selling, they admitted they spoofed for several hours.

(146,331 posts)I have had the same old tiny Nokia flip phone and Verizon number for over 10 years. Almost daily, the phone rings and I answer:
"Jennifer?"
Jennifer gets texts, too, on my tiny cellphone, with the battery that stays charged for two weeks.
So, I googled my number, plus the name, Jennifer. Sure enough, there's a Jennifer C. who shows up with that number.
So, I figure that Jennifer C. got into debt she couldn't pay, cancelled her Verizon contract, and I was lucky enough to win the Verizon lottery and got her number.
I finally started answering the calls and explaining this to the person who called. That works, sometimes. Threatening to sic the local D.A. on them works better, though. The people who call are not nice.
My advice? When you sign up for a Verizon cell contract, ask them not to give you Jennifer's number. Just saying...

(82,849 posts)I've had my cell number for over a decade, but someone named Autumn used it to run up some debts or something. I finally called one of the debt collectors back and persuaded him that Autumn isn't at my number and please quit calling me five times a week. That actually dried things up for a little while, but the texts have started up again, always with the blind links which I'm sure as hell not going to click on.
I click through on the robocalls and demand the person's full name. That usually ends the call quickly. They've been coming thick and fast the last couple of days, as if the scammers got a new phone to make their calls. The cell companies should just have a setting on your phone that you can switch on and off, like airplane mode: If my phone doesn't know you (that is, you're not in my contacts), I don't know you, and your call is automatically blocked. I'm sure the technology exists, but the scam calls are probably what makes the profit margin for Sprint, Verizon and the rest of them.

(23,337 posts)If the incoming call isnt in my contacts, Robokiller answers the call, messes with the scammer and records the call so I can hear it later if I want. Its kinda fun.

(29 posts)Damn, those videos are so satisfying. Those scammers deserve to get that. lol. I wouldn't try those, though. I prefer to just ignore those robocalls, especially if I'm not familiar with the numbers. If I get some from legit businesses, I swear I will sue them like the one that I read at https://www.whycall.me/news/consumer-wins-massive-229500-robocall-lawsuit-against-time-warner-cable/

(14,494 posts)a while back AT&T stopped supporting that comm. format (maybe 2G ?). Those things are tough as nails and even worked inside steel-cased industrial systems I serviced. I bought two or three refurbished ones after Nokia quit making them.
Had to start using a damned smart phone but I don't use it with any data provision. Only use it as a phone. A friend gave it to me second-hand for free.

(34,137 posts)My name is listed with just my first initial and last name on my landline. I told the guy there was no one here by that name and hung up on him.
Later, I told my husband I should have told him I'd rather do business with Medicare Poetic.

Its not nearly as scary in that female computer monotone. Its like being threatened by Alexa. 😂

(32,767 posts)The blasted robocalls all seem to happen during dinnertime too. Luckily I have caller ID so I never EVER answer them. I block the numbers the first chance I get too.

(146,331 posts)I work in my home office, so business calls some in there. I have a headset phone on my desk, so I can type while talking to clients.
I keep office hours. I don't answer the phone outside of office hours except for family calls. Other calls to to voice mail.
My cell phone is used for family and outgoing family calls only. I do not want a business call in the middle of the night. I don't call clients on it, ever, because they'd just use that number instead of my business number.
