NYC Burger King has been passing off beef as Impossible Whoppers

Kate Bernot
Yesterday 10:08am Filed to: BURGER KING

People abstain from meat for plenty of reasons—ethical, dietary, religious—and for many, this choice is a serious one. That makes this news of a Burger King in Brooklyn, which admits to serving regular beef burgers to customers who’d ordered vegan Impossible Whoppers, more than a mere mix-up.

Eater reports the Burger King at 736 Broadway in Brooklyn has for weeks been filling Seamless delivery orders for Impossible Whoppers with regular Whoppers, asking the Seamless driver to inform the customer of the switch. But according to customers who spoke to Eater, drivers had not informed them of the substitution, and their receipts read “Impossible Whopper.” The Impossible Whopper is only available in select cities, and NYC is not yet one of them, despite what the Seamless version of BK’s menu advertised.

“We have recently become aware that due to a technology error, one of our franchisees incorrectly listed the Impossible Whopper as a menu item available at some New York-area restaurants through two third-party delivery platforms,” a Burger King spokesperson told The Takeout. “The issue has been corrected and the item is no longer listed as an option until we officially bring the Impossible Whopper to New York. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Any guests who ordered an Impossible Whopper through delivery in the New York area and have any questions may call 866-394-2493.”

The Seamless page has since removed the Impossible Whopper, which had reportedly been listed since May 20.

We humans evolved as omnivores. Eating meat, fruit, and vegetables. Oh, and we reached final human form eating cooked food. Think about it.

My daughter is allergic to poultry. When she eats it, it kicks her autoimmine disorder out of remission - making life temporarily miserable and increasing her already extraordinary risk of colon cancer even higher.

If she ordered beef (just to take it out of your trigger zone), and was - instead - given poultry, the restaurant has measurably decreased her quality of life short-term - and actuallylikely shortened it. This is not a hypothetical - from age 5 she has known the words that label meats that are safe to eat, and has known when any meat is unrecognizable and not labeled, that she has to get someone to check the label. She ate meat labeled taco beef - which she knows comes from a cow. Like clockwork, her disease came out of remission. It took us a bit of time to track down - but the next time we went to the restaurant and thought about the timing we asked them to shows us the label. It was, predictably, poultry. We are lucky that the "only" reaction she has is slow to develop and not immediatly life-threatening. Others with allergies go into anaphalactic shock, and some die if assistance is not immediately available.

This particular story has NOTHING to do with vegetarianism. It has to do with misrepresenting the content of food - and that that misrepresentation can seriously harm people who are allergic to meat.

Food allergies are common -- and even meat can cause a serious allergy in some people. We ALL are entitled to know what we are paying for.

https://acaai.org/allergies/types/food-allergies/types-food-allergy/meat-allergy

If you are allergic to meat, your body considers meat to be a physical threat. The first time you have this response, your immune system makes specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight the threat off. These antibodies attached to immune cells throughout your body.

After that, each time you eat meat, the allergen binds to the IgE antibodies and causes the cells to release massive amounts of histamine and other chemicals to try to protect you.

Depending on the tissue in which these antibodies are released, these chemicals will cause you to have symptoms that can range from mild to severe. A severe allergic reaction can include anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that must be treated immediately.

Plus some people are vegetarian for religious reasons. For me it’s ethical. I wouldn’t be too bothered if I ate meat accidentally, because I believe that where ethics is concerned intention is what matters, but for some people this would be a genuinely big deal, however much you scoff.

19. Red Meat Allergies Caused By Tick Bites Are On The Rise

Tick bites can cause all sorts of nasty afflictions. And if you're bitten by a Lone Star tick, here's one more to add to the list: a red meat allergy.

Laura Stirling, 51, a Realtor who lives in Severna Park, Md., was diagnosed with the allergy last year. She got a tick bite while walking on a trail with her dog, Gunner, near her home.

"I found [the tick] 3 or 4 inches to the left of my hip bone," Stirling recalls. At the time, she say, she didn't think much of it. "I just took it off and threw it away."

Then, three weeks later, after she ate an Italian-style pork sausage for dinner, she had a horrible reaction. The reaction began about six hours after her meal, which is typical of this allergy.

So it could happen to anyone.

My wife is a mostly vegan vegetarian. I'm mostly vegetarian. But I suppose we are hypocrites about the ethical and environmental aspects because we have large dogs and we don't expect them to be vegetarian. They eat Kirkland (Costco) dry food.

The Impossible Burger was not even available in that area. They were selling counterfeit Burgers. This sounds like a rogue franchise owner.

be very conservative in what I order to make sure beef or beef powder/seasoning was not used. It takes hardly any amount to set off an attack -- which closes up my throat, gives me hives, and gives me an arthritis flare up that lasts for days. Many years ago Campbell's included beef flavoring in their 2% natural spices recipe for their vegetable soup. I ate it assuming vegetable soup would not contain any meat, but when I reacted like I do when I eat beef I contacted them, they admitted it, (I was shocked they did) and said they would remove it.

Seriously, a vegetarian should stick with the salads, like I do. As a group, the fast food places are doing better salads nowadays. The cheese isn't healthy, but if you're on the road and stuck, it's something to eat.
