(17,311 posts)Or in the case of President Drumpf, 94 steps back, no steps forward.

(15,751 posts)Reminds me of the quote:
'Is there any undesirable human trait that Mr. Trump does not possess?' - G. Will
[Something quite remarkable about all that].

(81,322 posts)Well, look in the mirror, Georgie-boy. High n mighty holier-than-thou elitist CONservatives like you have been building toward this very result FOR YEARS. THIS unintended CONsequence is what you get when you work for decades to badmouth, undercut, and cripple government and offer public prayers to the tax cut god and preach so sanctimoniously about the pestilence of lazy moochers and the desperate need to comfort the already-comfortable.
THIS condition now is where that selfish, shortsighted jerkitude can lead - and now actually HAS taken form and shape.
THIS is what you and all the rest of us are reaping - from the seeds you carefully sowed and tended and watered and fertilized over several decades.
THIS is what that lame-ass supply-side economics and starve-the-beast bullshit will produce for you.
THIS is the logical CONclusion.
THIS is the then that inevitably leads from the if in your if/then scenario.
THIS is the result you get. Your god Reagan and his penny wise-pound foolish gospel of tax-hating and screw the poor and IGMFU worldview (I Got Mine, F-U) have led you by the nose through all that pie-in-the-sky to this dismal time.
As you fervent, glazed-over-eyed republi-CONS said with your own slogan blared out to the world during one of your big CONventions (I think it was the McCain/Palin one): You Built It.
Happy now?

(15,751 posts)things on the other side, including this quote. Pragmatically, some 'alliances' on some
occasions are necessary. LBJ's tremendous, and in many ways unrivaled, accomplishments were made possible by working with all sorts of conservatives and compromises.
I don't like the attitude of writing off all who are not pretty much aligned with Dems - and dismayed at the short-sightedness of Dem purists putting targets on the back of needed centrist incumbents in the primaries.

(15,540 posts)So, despite his hatred of Trump, he can go take a flying leap as far as I'm concerned.

(15,751 posts). . . Stalin had an unbelievable number of sickening, etc., etc., traits, policies, murders that he was personally responsible for. . .
. . . However, an 'alliance' with Stalin was extremely necessary in containing Hitler in WWII - and FDR prudently, did what he had to do, and made the deals. Not doing the deal would have been dangerous, costly for American lives [Russia lost 9 million lives], etc.
LBJ had to ally with the very racist, anti women, Solid South Committee Chairmen to pass Civil Rights [voting, women's chapter rights, etc.], Medicare, Medicaid, etc. [Great Society legislation], to pass which would not pass any other way. [A number on the Dem left were bitterly angry with LBJ - at the time]. [Extremely doubtful any President since could get anything like that passed].
The more George Wills, moderate Republicans, Never Trumpers, solid conservatives, those who simply hate trump, etc., Dems can ally with on various issues; the better are Dem chances of winning in 2020, gaining more seats in Congress, and getting more legislation of all kinds passed.
As of now, it looks quite possible, even if it's only remotely possible, that traitortrump will win in 2020 - a sickening thought; losing the House [with the help of Dem purists] would be unbelievably . . .
[Thank you for your reply IImart].

(15,303 posts)The rich vs. the have-nots. This has long been the human condition.
Nation-states with monetary and protectionist policies have been promoting the class-based societies.
With the advent of digital currencies and widening surveillance, it is every plutocrat's dream. No more barter for real services, no more cash for exchange, no more anonymity.
Everything that transacts needs to be controlled by the top class(es).
Well, except their own transactions.

Democrats are capitalists, too. America has a capitalist economy with some social program safety nets. As even Bernie will tell you!

(51,574 posts)Scandinavia has regulated capitalism, but it looks like socialism to us because we are so unfamiliar with what a strong safety net is supposed to look like.

(10,203 posts)Our system is brutally corrupt at the highest levels. Without proper oversight, capitalism ceases to exist and becomes something that only serves the few at the top.

(53,791 posts)but it's highly regulated and taxed yet robust. They're not trying to get rid of capitalism they control it to provide a strong safety net for their peopleuniversal healthcare, free college, much less income disparity.
That is not socialism whatever your term for socialism isdemocratic socialism, classic socialismsocialism is about transforming the society into one where industry is own by the people/state.
Show me a society where that has been successful. That has never worked. Sanders and his supporters need to start advocating social democracy and they might gain some traction.

(22,822 posts)Capitalism is about profit. Period.

(37,648 posts)But that's where our social programs come in. The ones that the Republicans have been trying to kill since they were implemented.

(29,251 posts)Conscious business[1] enterprises and people (sometimes referred to as conscious capitalism[2]) are those that choose to follow a business strategy, in which they seek to benefit both human beings and the environment. The conscious business movement in the US emerged from the theory of corporate social responsibility, which pushes for a "values-based" approach where values represent social and environmental concerns both locally and globally. This effort is related to not-just-for-profit business models, conscious consumerism, and socially responsible investing.

(9,350 posts)I do not really agree with this meme. Many corporate workers still have some form of a pension and benefits. A number of corporations provide good retirement benefits and healthcare benefits. Also, a number of corporations provide fairly good pay. I am not so sure Capitalism destroyed the educational system in America. It can also be argued that Capitalism did not actually put anyone in debt.
