By CAITLIN OPRYSKO 06/11/2019 09:27 AM EDT
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell eased up on his criticism of President Donald Trump's threat to impose steep tariffs on imported goods from Mexico, saying Tuesday the president deserved applause for the way his brinkmanship worked out.
McConnells shift in tone comes as there remains an air of mystery surrounding the deals specifics, and whether or not concessions made by Mexico were actually significant or came to fruition solely because of the tariff threat.
They just cant let the president have a win, McConnell said in an interview on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitts show.
Trump would have faced a GOP revolt had negotiators not struck a deal late Friday to avert the tariffs from going into effect, with some senators warning that there was a veto-proof majority in the chamber willing to block the levies. McConnell in particular made clear last week that his conference was opposed to the move, but on Tuesday he contended that Trump came out on top in the stand-off, and cheered the president for how it all eventually played out.

A win? Are you fucking kidding me? A deal that the Mexican legislature is gonna
pass in the future and in secret to stop Trump's tariffs that the Republicans would
never let go through along with some kind of deal that would have Mexico buying
all kinds of US agricultural products too.
