Grassley: 'Congress has delegated too much authority to the president'

Grassley: 'Congress has delegated too much authority to the president'
By John Bowden - 06/11/19 05:11 PM EDT

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) sounded off on President Trump's use of executive authority on tariff action on Tuesday, accusing Congress of improperly giving up its power to the White House.

During a call with reporters first reported by Politico, the Iowa senator and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said tariff actions should be decided by elected lawmakers in Congress rather than by the president's fiat.

"It adds up to something pretty simple: Congress has delegated too much authority to the president of the United States," he said, according to Politico.

"There’s absolutely no constitutional crisis that this president or any other president has created," Grassley reportedly continued. "The constitutional crisis comes from the elected representatives of the people over the last 80 years making a dictator out of the presidency."

Grassley went on to state that "a lot" of progress had been made on a bill he is working on to strip the executive branch of some tariff authority.

“You can imagine how the president feels about tariffs,” he reportedly said. “He may not look favorably on this, so I want a very strong vote in my committee and then, in turn, a very strong vote on the floor of the Senate.”

“This is not about Trump. It’s about the balancing of power,” Grassley added, according to Politico.

But if this starts the ball rolling to take back some of trump power, tariffs and more, and causes some of the republicans to actually stand up to trump, well I can live with that!

Probably they've realized Trump is administering the tariffs in a totally corrupt way, which is compromising their own re-election chances. Favoring companies in his tariff scheme that donate to Trump directly, rather than the the RNC, or to GOP Senate candidates ... would be one suspicion.

Or it's simpler: some of their big-money donors are just pissed about the whole thing, and have let the GOPpers know in no uncertain terms that they better get this sitch fixed ...

This isn't the first in the last few weeks, so maybe he's waking up...or not!

He thinks he is going to get a Bill through the Senate limiting Trump's power? Really?

Let's not lose track of the fact that good ol' Chuck is very selective in his complaints about executive powers. Haven't heard a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about the White House and Justice stiffing congress on testimony or subpoenas have you? Or Trump threatening military action against (take your pick: Iran, N.Korea, Venezuela, California) Crickets! Grassley has been around for a long time and he has been complicit in every chapter from Iran-Contra on up through Weapons of MD and the Russian/Republican election two step. Don't be fooled for a second. He's a political hack straight through to the bone.
