Courtney foils Trump's red, white, blue Air Force 1 plan Amendment won't allow gold-plated interior

Washington — Rep. Joe Courtney on Wednesday threw a big wrench into President Donald Trump’s plans to paint the iconic Air Force One jets red, white and blue.

During a marathon hearing of the House Armed Services Committee on a bill that will authorize Pentagon spending for 2020, Courtney, D-2nd District, introduced an amendment that restricts spending on any changes made to the white and sky-blue Boeing airplanes that have served as presidential transport since the early 1960s.

Courtney’s amendment, adopted by committee members on a 31-26 party line vote, would require congressional approval for excessive spending on “interior, paint and fixtures.”

The press speculated that Jackie was interested in Onassis only for his money. But those who witnessed the relationship up close could see why the then-39-year-old Jackie was longing for a partner. Her personal assistant at the time, Kathy McKeon, remembers Jackie frequently asking for her help with odd jobs in the evening hours.

“She always used to have company all the time, and all the sudden it got very quiet,” McKeon said in an interview. “She was by herself at night, and I think she was very lonely. She needed somebody to talk to.”

And she was thinking of her children.

“A lot of people said, ‘Oh, my God, what did she marry that guy for? But he was a good father to John and Caroline,” McKeon remembered. “He would sit with them at the dining room table and ask how was school. He might have been an older man, but he paid attention to them, and they loved him.”

44. There Is Also The Temple Of Dendur
Fri Jun 14, 2019, 10:52 PM
Jun 2019

“But Dendur’s story gets especially dramatic in the late 1950s, when Egypt began preparations for the new Aswan High Dam off the Nile. Although the proposal would provide irrigation and hydroelectric power to Egypt’s growing population, it would also drown several ancient structures built along the river’s banks—Dendur among them. With the Egyptian government lacking resources to pay for the relocation of the ancient structures, UNESCO launched a fundraising campaign, and the U.S stepped up to the plate. According to some sources, it was Jacqueline Kennedy who urged JFK to convince Congress to approve the $10 million contribution to the cause. In return, Egypt offered the U.S. the Temple of Dendur.

Johnson’s administration inherited the task of deciding which institution would receive the temple. As a November 1968 New York Magazine story recalled, “Philadelphia was interested in it, Baltimore, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Memphis. There was a real estate operator in Florida; Southern Illinois University was thinking of putting the temple in the Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome after Expo was over; and a group of towns in Southern Illinois with names like Cairo (the ‘little Egypt of Illinois’) found in the coincidence of nomenclature sufficient reason for wanting the temple.”

https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-2-000-year-old-egyptian-temple-ended-manhattan

Many wanted it but the Metropolitan Museum in NY got it and built a special annex to the museum to house it in a fitting manner.

I love that building, especially the interior. I think it's beautiful. There is something about old train stations that just captivates me. I can't explain it, maybe it has something to do with being brought back to a time when train travel was in its heyday.

And what has Melania done for the nation? Be Best.

the color change light color is easier to see inflight, reduces heat absorption. Dark color tends to fade quicker and is hard to see a night. Its also difficult with areas that tend to have lots of birds. It confuses them. This new plane isn't like the older ones it has a bigger wing span and much more composite materials.

Dark blue on the bottom, a red stripe, then the white at the top.

Makes it look like a cut-rate airliner. His 'new' schemes are very similar to the old US Airways scheme before they were bought out:

“I like the concept of red, white and blue,” Mr. Trump said on Friday. “The baby blue” of the Kennedy era, he said, “doesn’t fit with us.”

https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/trump-ghostwriter-interview-taxes-loss-13832896.php

In an exclusive story Thursday for Yahoo News, Charles Leerhsen told about his two years of shadowing Trump while writing "Surviving at the Top" in 1988-90.

That was about midway through the 1985-1994 span during which, according to the New York Times, Trump racked up losses over $1 billion, more than any single taxpayer in U.S. history.

Along with "The Art of the Deal," ghostwritten by Tony Schwartz, "Surviving at the Top," helped cement the image of Trump, the savvy businessman.

<snip>

—Trump often seemed unengaged by the day-to-day business dealings of his hotels and airline. What did excite him, Leershen writes, were fabric swatches, which he would choose for his hotels' upholstery needs. "Indeed, flipping through fabric swatches seemed at times to be his main occupation. Some days he would do it for hours, then take me in what he always called his 'French military helicopter' to Atlantic City — where he looked at more fabric swatches or sometimes small samples of wood paneling."

If the Senate doesn't include the same language (and the president sign it of course)... then nobody "foiled" anyone.

More importantly... language like this is pretty regularly ruled unconstitutional. Congress can't appropriate funds and then say "but you have to come back to us for approval before you spend it".

They do it all the time... but presidents can (and do) ignore it.
