Why doesn't the media and commentators clear up the confusion? Chrysler had to intervene in 2012. We cant afford these quaint games from 2012 when Romney reported Jeep manufacturing lie?

(33,643 posts)The dossier was created by Chris Steele. Entirely.
Chris Steele was hired as a subcontractor by Fusion GPS AFTER funding of the oppo-research (originally not related to Russia at all) was taken over by the Clinton Campaign.
Press Free Beacon or whatever it is, the Cons, were indeed the first to hire Fusion, but they had nothing to do with the dossier or the investigation of Trumps Russia ties. That started because the Clinton Campaign asked them to look into Trump's Russia Ties.
If that is your point ... kinda hard to elucidate what you're getting at ... it's not a very valid one.
It IS an important point in general though that
a) Clinton campaign knew nothing about Steele being hired at the time
b) Deeming it too serious to be left to politics, Steele DID NOT give the Dossier to the Clinton Campaign, he went to McCain and the FBI with it.

(9,123 posts)But I can recall the dossier being said to be used by Jeb Bush in the Republican primary, so I continually get my hackles up when it becomes accepted as fact that H Clinton initiated it. She did not.

"Steele, a former British intelligence agent, created the Steele dossier on behalf of Fusion GPS, a U.S.-based opposition research firm that was hired to work for the Clinton campaign.
But the firms research into Trump was already underway when the Clinton campaign got involved. It was originally hired by the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative website.
It was only after Trump secured the Republican nomination that Fusion GPS was hired on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee by their law firm, Perkins Coie, to continue compiling research about Trump."

(33,643 posts)To the US Congress. He's the owner of Fusion GPS.
And nothing that Politifact article (or at least the blurb you included) says is actually contradictory to the timeline I just laid out. In fact it says the same thing ... only it doesn't tell you when in the process Steele was hired.
All I'm saying is ... it was AFTER the Con Site stopped paying, and AFTER the Clinton Campaign ... began paying. It's incorrect to imply that the Con Site paid for the Dossier.
Since the context here is 'arguing with WingNuts', you don't want to start out the argument with your facts wrong.
Jeb Bush never used the Dossier, you are mis-remembering or the story you read was mistaken.

(13,903 posts)I know they paid for and received some research from Fusion but was the Steele Dossier part of it in the first place.

(9,123 posts)Maybe it's in there. But my point us that the research was begun by Republicans in the primary. Not by the Clintin campaign. I would not take any old Republucan's word on where it began. They lie like rugs, and our cable news media is dizzy enough trying to track this maniac in the oval 24/7.
