The US, from colonial days up until the 1950's or so, was like (at foundational superstructure level) an insect trapped in amber, stuck in time via a constitutionally moulded form of government that (other than the Civil War, which even then was NOT external) has not had to deal with invasion, and war on its land. The melting pot theory took all the white Euro immigrants up until WWII and homogenised them in terms of overarching interactions with the hybrid society already set up.

We PoC were decimated, enslaved, objectified, bought, sold, raped, killed, etc etc etc for centuries, and only in the post WWII political environs and their attendant zeitgeist did we start to even begin to take baby steps towards obtain our collective human rights.
Now Trumpian demagoguery, combined with ultra-RW white nationalism and RW corpo-Rethugs' rapacious gangster/exploitative/crony capitalism, all combine to drive the masses of white male domination (most of them have no real power other than what the prejudiced power systemic dynamics give them, ie. white and male privilege, but no real power other than that) and raw hate to a fever pitch of released rage and hate.
