DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel Backs Mnuchin's Refusal to Hand Over Trump's Tax Returns

The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) published an opinion on Friday in support of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin‘s refusal to hand President Donald Trump‘s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee led by Chairman Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.).

The opinion, penned by OLC’s Assistant Attorney General Steven Engel, said that House Democrats were using 26 U.S. Code § 6103(f) merely as a pretext to obtain Trump’s tax returns. Engel said that Mnuchin was right to say this was not a legitimate legislative purpose.

Office of Legal Counsel

On January 31, 2017, the White House announced that President Donald Trump intended to nominate Engel to serve as the Assistant Attorney General heading the Office of Legal Counsel.[4][2] Engel's nomination was opposed by U.S. Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war who was tortured while in captivity. McCain cited Engel's involvement in commenting on and reviewing one of the so-called "Torture memos" that signed off on six different "enhanced interrogation techniques".[9] Various human rights groups expressed concerns about Engel's nomination, also citing his involvement with the July 20, 2007, memo authored by Steven G. Bradbury, then-head of the OLC.[10] Engel was confirmed by a 51–47 vote, largely along party lines with one Democrat, Senator Joe Manchin (West Virginia), voting in favor of confirmation.

They are hoping on their RW fucked up judges and US SC fucked up RW judges to agree with them.

Delay. Hopefully t-rump will be long gone by then. Barr, t-rump and his cronies and the Republican party are stepping on the Constitution, laws and rules of the land. I hope they fall way down the hellish hole.

And thanks to purists in 2016, republicans got a chance to stack the Courts for the last 2 and a half years.

What can the House do if Trump ignores the laws and the Courts back him by claiming that they have no juristiction (though the same courts would be quick to overturn the legal efforts of a democratic President)?
