He also said that the U.S. Constitution allows him to do "whatever I want."
In an interview on ABC, host George Stephanopoulos noted that the special counsel's report said that Trump had ordered his White House counsel to fire Robert Mueller.
"Number one, I was never going to fire Mueller," Trump insisted. "I never suggested firing Mueller."
"That's not what [the special counsel] says," the ABC host interrupted.
"I don't care what he says," Trump snapped.
"Why would [the White House counsel] lie under oath?" Stephanopoulos wondered.
"Because he wanted to make himself look like a good person," Trump argued. "Number one, I didn't. He wasn't fired. But more importantly, Article II [of the Constitution] allows me to do whatever I want. Article II would have allowed me to fire him."
"I wasn't going to fire him," the president added. "You know why? Because I watched Richard Nixon go around firing people and that didn't work out too well."

(3,433 posts)Until Congress stops him, Trump is absolutely a dictator. He had committed numerous crimes and no one to date had held him accountable. The attorney general is acting as Trumps personal defense lawyer. He has others preventing Congress from obtaining any information which could be used to impeach or investigate. I am not convinced that they will get it even if they open official impeachment proceedings.
Trump fancies himself above the law and that is exactly what he is at this time. I see no evidence that is going to change anytime soon. Our constitutional republic has become an honor system

(3,205 posts)The house can investigate him, they can vote for articles of impeachment, they can impeach him as the republicans did with Clinton, but he is NOT going to be removed from power or have his power curtailed as long as the Senate republicans are going to protect him. And they will continue to protect him. McConnell has stated that.

(28,272 posts)At the moment, effectively NOBODY. I've had it with faint-hearted Democratic leadership---we have an authoritarian madman in the White House, and we're not doing much of anything about it. Goddamn it, everybody wake the hell up! Pelosi and Schumer, if you're not up to a meaningful, out-and-out confrontation with trump, then get the fuck out of the way.

(67,112 posts)sent, in general, is the actions of this ass in the WH are acceptable ... as his actions become normalized. Many Americans IMO have the attention span of a rock ... and I think many believe tRump is way off center, but his actions are possibly OK. If impeachment were begun, IMO, the general public would start to take significant interest.
