PoliticoThe Democratic research group American Bridge is preparing a $50 million campaign to win over a slice of President Donald Trumps base, and new polling has convinced the organization that Trump is vulnerable on pocketbook issues, especially health care, among white working-class voters.
The battleground-state polling is a new step in American Bridges plans to target Trump voters in small towns and rural areas with ads linking local events to unpopular Trump policies. The groups president, Bradley Beychok, is not aiming to win a majority of those people in 2020. But even making modest inroads with these voters compared to 2016 would be a huge boost to the partys hopes of beating Trump next year.
Were trying to go from losing these segments [of voters] 85-15 to maybe 75-25, Beychok said, acknowledging that, even if the project succeeds, the party will still likely lose that segment badly. 2018 gave us some good indications, and theres data that these voters are attainable. But they want you to reach them and speak to them in a localized manner. You have to compete for these folks every day, and you cant wait until the general.
American Bridge polled voters in small towns and rural areas, screening out self-identified liberal Democrats, to find out what they thought of the president. The group gave Trump a positive job approval rating overall, and it backed a generic Republican for Congress by 29 points over a generic Democrat. But the Republican-leaning pool of voters also gave Trump unfavorable ratings on several key issues, highlighting potential avenues of attack for American Bridge: 50 percent rated Trump negatively on cutting taxes for people like me.

of healthcare voters who voted Obama twice and then turned around and pulled the lever for Trump. We need to win them back.

unfortunately, that's not how politics in this country works.
Trump will roll out another vapid promise to roll out a plan right after the election, and it'll be the bestest ever plan ever thought of and anybody who doesn't like it will be fired, blah, blah, blah.
Rule #1 for the long con, when you find a patsy, make sure you drain them dry. Repub Politics 101.
