Pelosi clinches deal with progressives on border spending bill

The speaker whipped her caucus behind closed doors amid tense intraparty maneuvering.

By SARAH FERRIS, HEATHER CAYGLE and JENNIFER SCHOLTES 06/25/2019 10:53 AM EDT Updated 06/25/2019 04:28 PM EDT

Speaker Nancy Pelosi clinched an 11th hour deal with progressives on an emergency border spending package on Tuesday, avoiding an embarrassing intraparty split and ensuring the bill’s passage.

Top Democrats made several tweaks to the contentious $4.5 billion border funding bill, just hours before it will be considered on the floor, according to multiple lawmakers and aides.

The newest version will include strict conditions requiring private detention facilities to meet certain standards of care within six months or risk losing their contract — the second time that progressive leaders have forced changes to the bill in the last two days amid reluctance to giving President Donald Trump any money for his immigration agenda.

"The president would love for this bill to go down today," Pelosi told the caucus as she urged support, according to a senior Democratic aide. At one point, Pelosi asked the caucus, “Does anyone have a problem with the bill?" the aide said. No one responded aloud.

a 'whole' 6 months to change, meanwhile kids die.

"Does anyone have a problem with the bill?" Maybe some immigrant kids might.

The NGO's already working for the children would be funded.

16. You know, actually reading something before ranting about the contents makes one look far more

credible.

Some Democrats said they were persuaded to support the emergency aid after speaking with nonprofits and nongovernment organizations, or NGOs, that are caring for migrants on the border and are saying they are running out of money to do so. The House bill includes $60 million for these groups.

The kids who are at risk are the ones in the temporary housing, which they are not supposed to be in for more than a day.

The NGOs are the ones providing the care for them once they are out.

Simple math tells us that the more room and staffing the NGOs have, the more impetus the Border Patrol temporary shelter staff has to move those kids out of the holding cells to where they can get care.

You're welcome.
