An avowed white supremacist who drove his car into a crowd of anti-racism protesters during a white nationalist rally in Virginia is sentenced to life in prison on hate crime charges.

27. The Sentence he was given today was for federal charges...

... and for those, Trump could pardon him. However, he was previously convicted on state charges and, for those, Trump cannot pardon him. So, even if Trump pardons him for the federal crimes, he would still remain in prison.
