Gentle rolling mostly.
Almost a minute now.
We're fine.
Not sure where the epicenter is.

and stuff swayed for over a minute.
I was in the Bay Area for Loma Prieta... so I'v been through some bigger earthquakes.

(21,675 posts)during Loma Prieta. I was at work and we had to get under our desks. Minimal shaking. Loma Prieta was bad, I don't even want to imagine LA after the big one.

(8,419 posts)Hopefully this was a correction from yesterdays.
FWIW, I was driving and felt nothing in the OC, wife felt nothing, but when I got home one of the dogs was freaking out.
EDIT - Shit CalTech is on now, the latest moved it in the wrong direction, thus more pressure on the fault.

(424 posts)I remember. That was a bad one. I have run outside myself only to see the swaying electrical lines to yell, ... Run back in. It is the doorway we are looking for. I will take an earthquake to a tornado though, any day.

(15,805 posts)Quake a foreshock leading up to a bigger quake. Was tonight's 7.1 the main event, or are we in for an even bigger quake in the coming hours/days?

(12,682 posts)As most there are pretty short, this would probably be "the big one" since it's not on the San Andreas itself. However, there's a large connecting transverse fault that can put some major tension on the San Andreas, and that can cause larger quakes closer to major California infrastructure.

(12,682 posts)We didn't feel it down here in our double-wide in central San Diego, but it's possible our location is in a shadow zone for a Ridgecrest quake, since there are some other San Diegans reporting they felt it.

(4,547 posts)I just went out to add some chlorine and it was sloshing rapidly, like someone had just taken a dive in, but no one had. I was baffled for a few minutes until I realized it had to be a quake. It was agitated for 15 to 20 minutes.

(9,655 posts)And I felt it. The chair I was sitting in started swaying back and forth in the wrong direction. And then it stopped, and then it started back up again and things started rattling around the house. I'm a California Native and that felt weird.
California natives know that we only have three seasons; Fire, earthquake and mudslide.

(51,638 posts)My red cross backpack is always ready to grab. It has been updated yearly. I am out the door with my dog, her meds, cash, glasses, phone, documents and emergency backpack when it hits here. Have a full tank of gas too. My dog and myself are my first priorities. I decided to make my car my go to destination since you may have to live in it for a bit.

(51,638 posts)The kit also came with "food" in freeze dried, moisture resistance packages. I was curious and decided to try it after about 10 years and the dogs wouldn't even eat it. I threw it out.....and I will eat anything (even balut, the 18 day old duck embryo eaten in Asian countries).

(1,718 posts)Now they're no longer laughing, and you shouldn't either. Remember what happened to San Francisco in 1906. If the next big one hits it's not going to be the earthquake that does the most damage, it'll be the aftermath and chaos from looters.
mnhtnbb
(31,408 posts)at the organization that was a trade association of regional hospitals, one of my responsibilities was developing a disaster plan that would coordinate the emergency response of the 200+ member hospitals to a quake of such magnitude that it would probably knock out several hospitals and thus stress remaining ones to respond to the emergencies that would result from The Big One. (The Northridge quake later hit in 1994.)
It's coming one of these days. I'm really glad I no longer live in California. Wouldn't want to be there when it hits.

(38,451 posts)I am very happy that you are OK. Again, Thank You for your post. I saw some short news reports this morning, made during the quake yesterday, of news anchors talking live on TV, then reporting the quake as it happened. Just as you did. Thank You again.
