Fox News: It's a "great blessing" that people are too poor to retire.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-guest-great-blessing-and-miracle-that-millions-of-americans-expect-to-never-retire?ref=home

Appearing on Making Money with Charles Payne on Monday, Trend Macrolytics chief investment officer Donald Luskin was asked by host Charles Payne to react to a recent poll that shows 23 percent of Americans believe they are never going to retire. The survey also found that another quarter of workers believe they won’t be able to retire until after they’re 65 years old.

“Is that worrisome for you, Donald?” Payne questioned the frequent Fox guest.

“Doesn’t worry me personally,” Luskin replied. “I guess I’m one of those people who plans never to retire.”

The way the consulting firm executive sees it, spending your twilight years enjoying leisure activities is boring.

“I mean, is bowling that interesting?” Luskin declared. “Is fishing that interesting? I happen to love my work. Why do I want to stop it? Not like it hurts. Why would I stop it? This is great!”

He wasn’t done heaping praise on Americans endlessly working.

“What a great country where we have the opportunity to keep working,” Luskin enthusiastically exclaimed. “What a miracle where our lives are long enough and we’re healthy enough and mentally alert enough so we don’t have to retire like generations before us! This is a great blessing! You should embrace it.”

Example a)
I once was at an event where a huge corporation tried to recruit people as consultants. Fantastic pay, fantastic perks, but the work-hours would be brutal and the presenters basically admitted that this job would burn you out.

Example b)
A consultant once came into the company of a friend of mine to increase the efficiency. He looked over their shoulders during work, asked stupid questions about their jobs and in the end he proposed solutions that were not convincing. On the plus side, he got paid.

snip--"But that doesn't make any of it true. Things today just aren't that bad. Sure, there are trouble spots in the economy, as the government takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and jitters about Wall Street firm Lehman Brothers, amply demonstrate. And unemployment figures are up a bit, too. None of this, however, is cause for depression -- or exaggerated Depression comparisons."

https://washingtonmonthly.com/2008/09/15/donald-luskin-reclaims-his-title/

Just for giggles, here’s a compilation of some of Luskin’s other predictions (h/t). They include:

* “So what words are left to describe a really big down day like Thursday? How about, “Stocks became a better bargain than ever!”” — July 27, 2007 (DJIA closed at 13,265.47, 1843.47 points higher than Friday’s close.)

* “If you see any financial stocks that have gotten run over by a bus in the last couple months — and then the bus backed up and ran over them again — you might want to consider taking a flier, and putting some money down by expecting the unexpected.” — Oct. 26. 2007 (see a chart of financials over the past year here, and tell me whether you think Luskin was right. Best I can tell, they’ve lost about a third of their value, on average.)

* “THE BOTTOM IS IN. Yes, I know I’ve been too early in saying to buy stocks during the correction from the October highs. But all the classic signals of a durable bottom are in place now. Let me count the ways.” — Nov. 30, 2007 (DJIA closed 13371.42, 1949.43 points above Friday)

* “On Wall Street, vultures don’t go after dead things. They go after things that are alive and very cheap. And right now, they’re going after troubled financial stocks in a big way, which means it’s time to move in.” — Dec. 7, 2007 (see chart described above. Buy now, and you’ve only lost about 25%, on average, as of Friday.)

Just ten days ago, he truly outdid himself with a column called — I am not making this up — “GOP’s Palin Could Be Savior of Stock Market“.

I don’t mention this phrase lightly, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to the 6 million souls whose lives were taken away systematically.

I bring up the phrase as an exemplar of the incredibly toxic ideas being spooned out to every Fox-Trump toady. They are being fed propaganda of “1984”-quality all day, every day. Usually, it’s something fear-based, but this is insidious— “keep working, keep working. keep working...do not think of yourself, think instead of Big Brother who has given you so much, etc., etc.”

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_macht_frei
“Arbeit macht frei” is a German phrase meaning "work sets you free". The slogan is known for appearing on the entrance of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps.

He can't imagine the people who have spent a lifetime at hard physical labor, or standing on their feet all day, or worked outside when it's freezing or so hot there's danger of heat exhaustion or sunstroke...and on and on working double shifts or multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

Take it from someone who's sat behind a desk, as well worked in Construction and worked outside delivering mail for over 15 years in the Florida heat

These folks who've never set a foot outside in the elements can sit in front of a tv camera, in the nice conditioned air of a Television Studio, saying their opinions, meanwhile the most they've ever done is pushed a pencil, moved around a computer mouse, all while in the relative comfort of a 78 degree office?

Meanwhile, those folks who are exposed to the heat, humidity, cold, snow, rain, hell just the friggin MOTHER NATURE ELEMENTS daily, would LOVE to retire at 65, just because they go home TIRED daily. Yes, I know what it's like to be tired from working your mind all day, but I also know what it's like to go home tired from working your mind AND your body all day. Just because you're working your body, doesn't mean you're not also working your mind. "Watch your step" "Mind your Head" "Be careful of that Beam" Heck, while I used to walk door to door delivering mail, I'm also looking at mail in my arm and hand getting it ready for next delivery. While I'm driving a postal vehicle, I'm CAREFUL not to have an accident, because there are those who don't see that Postal Eagle on the side, they see a Postal DOLLAR SIGN on the side.

These idiots who've never physically worked a day in their life, can claim to LOVE THEIR JOB, and want to work till they die You go right ahead.

there are many people who have jobs and careers who will gladly work into their 70s and 80s and can do so because we are living healthier. Okay, remember I have dementia so it is hard for me to use the right words. Poor people can work longer at lousy jobs that help their family. My mother worked full time from the age of 14 in 1923 until she died of cancer at 58 except for a few years to raise my sister and me. In doing so she put her brother through college and kept her family together. Her sacrifice to give up college herself and a better life for herself helping the next generations.

I mean yeah, if you just sit in an air conditioned office working 9/5 every day you can probably keep working. For people who do actual physically demanding things, it's an entirely different story. Their bodies simply can't keep it up into old age.

Honestly some people are just workaholics, or they actually like what they do. I'm fine with that, but they shouldn't expect the rest of us to work until we're in the grave.
