A Texas man who had been missing for months was eaten, bones and all, by his pack of dogs, sheriffs deputies said.
Medical examiners said Tuesday that DNA testing determined that pieces of bone recovered from the dogs feces were those of 57-year-old Freddie Mack, according to the Johnson County Sheriffs Office.
Deputy Aaron Pitts said the 18 mixed-breed dogs apparently devoured all of Macks body, his clothing and his hair, leaving nothing larger than 2- to 5-inch bone fragments.
Never have we ever, or anyone weve spoken to, heard of an entire human being consumed, Pitts told The Associated Press. The bones were completely broken up and eaten.

(34,074 posts)They died with a dog in the home, no one was aware of the death, dog had no food - and the rest is pretty predictable, (This person was only partially consumed, though.)

(53,410 posts)I believe a human would do the same if they had to in order to try to survive.
I dont see why anyone would think this is odd.

(14,858 posts)I have no trouble believing this story. I had a lab mix that somehow got hold of a huge rack of ribs I had left out to thaw. She ate it all. She crunched up the bones so well I never even saw pieces of them in her feces, and I was paying attention in case she had problems passing all those bones.

My parents suddenly realized I was awfully quiet and went looking for me. Terrified when they couldn't find me, they guessed one place I might be was the pig lot, as there were new babies that were so cute.
With everyone at alert and running all over the place looking for me, my brother went to the basement and found me in the canned goods room fast asleep.

(11,631 posts)It may or may not be related but I have a small pack (5) of livestock guard dogs. They are Anatolian Shepherd x Pyrenees. They are nocturnal and watch over the dairy goats primarily but also chickens and calves. They deter and sometimes kill raccoons and primarily coyotes.
If an animal dies... even something as big as a 1400 lb cow. I used to bury it and they would always dig it up and consume it completely. Now I just let them dispose of it. It sounds crazy and the first time I saw them dig up a dead goat and eat it I was mortified thinking they don't need to get a taste for goat meat! But after reading up, this is their instinctual response to keep predators away. They do not leave dead animals to draw them. They consume them. And they are very good at their jobs.

Hadn't heard that one before. Although my 3 Pyr's get a gleam in their eye if I'm late with their home-cooked meals....

(11,686 posts)when this type of thing happens. You read or hear about this type of thing happen and it is not as strange as one might think. People seem to always forget that Fife or big old Butch are animals and that their very basic animal survival instincts are still there.

(102,292 posts)Take that, to all who want to make some "DOGS are DANGEROUS!" insinuation from this!!!
Likewise, I would hope that any LEO or animal control officers who, with no understanding whatsoever or evidence to the contrary, assume this to be a "dangerous" behavior and seek to destroy her, are immediately struck down by karmic lightning! Sorry, but this is overt ignorance and I'm tired of it. Humans, too, have shown a survival instinct that INCLUDES eating the dead if they are starving and no alternative option exists. It is hard-wired in mammals.

(44,973 posts)From the article, dogs also killed two of the dogs in the pack. So I have no reason to think otherwise, that they were not aggressive.

(13,421 posts)Aside from my first response to make a terrible joke about it, I think maybe the dogs were trying to survive and they did what they needed to. It's gross, and it is uncomfortable, but it is also a fact of life that other species are not bound by human esthetics. It's everywhere else in the animal world, why would it not be in canines? Shoot, we had a mated pair of conures and the male started to munch on the female one day when she got egg bound and died while we were at work.
The article does talk about the late owner's ill health, so there really is no way to know if he died on his own or if one of his dogs killed him. It's all very sad and incredibly disturbing, however
