Getting the vote is one, of course.
The next best thing...birth control.
We took control of our reproductive rights. We had a choice to not become pregnant. Some men in the world will impregnant a woman against her will. We gained sexual freedom.
Loretta Lynn's song "The Pill" came out in 1975 and she got a bit of a Dixie Chick treatment as a result. Many stations refused to play the song. Rural doctors said the song wound up educating women who would have otherwise never heard about the pill.
You wined me and denied me when I was you girl
Told me if I'd be your wife you'd show me the world
But all I've seen of this old world is a bed and a doctor bill
I'm tearin' down your brooder house because now I've got the pill
All these years I've stayed at home while you had all your fun
And every years that's gone by another baby's come
There's gonna be some changes made right here on nursery hill
You've set this chicken your last time cause now I've got the pill
This old maternity dress I've got is going in the garbage
The clothes I'm wearing from now on won't take up so much yardage
Miniskirts hot pants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I'm making up for all those years since I've got the pill
I'm tired of all your crowing how you and your hens play
While holding a couple in my arms another's on the way
This chicken's done for up her nest and ready to make a deal
And you can't afford to turn it down cause you know I've got the pill
This incubator is overused because you've kept it filled
The feeling good time's easy now since I've got the pill
It's gettin' dark it's roostin' time and that's too good to be real
Oh daddy don't you worry now cause momma's got the pill
I do think many women of today don't realize how much birth control have taken us out of the maternity dresses and given us independence. They don't know or understand how beneficial birth control is physically, emotionally, and financially.
This is not about sex. It's more than the right to control our reproductive organs. This is about independence and self-determination.
Limiting access to birth control makes it more difficult to exercise these rights. The harm we get from this takes us back to those days when women had to be pregnant against their will. Pregnancy was a chain. Pregnancy was oppression.
The Pill was freedom.
It's all in the lyrics.

(12,081 posts)That's exactly where they want us. So bogged down with children, we can't do anything else. We're not going back there. They can't even get the republican women to agree with them on that one.

(36,532 posts)I have a close business acquaintance who's a repub. A few weeks ago we were talking about all this & she was adamant, "They aren't taking my BC away! Or my daughters!" Today she 'liked' Romney on Facebook.
Ron Paul was her first choice.

(22,336 posts)Women used to have to choose between work and ever getting married. Some was general sexism but some was also just the logistics of it. It's hard to work when you're having baby after baby after baby, and have to pay someone to watch all your kids. Also, it can take a terrible toll on a woman's health to have a large number of babies. If women choose to do that, then they should have that choice, but those of us who want to limit to one or two or none should also have that option.
