Trump expected to order citizenship question added to the census

Trump expected to order citizenship question added to the census

Trump and A.G. William Barr have said they'd soon announce how the administration intends to ask the citizenship question as part of the census process.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce an executive action on getting the citizenship question added to the census, according to an administration official.

Trump announced on Twitter Thursday morning that he will hold a press conference in the afternoon to discuss his latest efforts at including the citizenship question as part of the census.

"The White House will be hosting a very big and very important Social Media Summit today," Trump tweeted. "Would I have become President without Social Media? Yes (probably)! At its conclusion, we will all go to the beautiful Rose Garden for a News Conference on the Census and Citizenship."

The real reason, however, is probably the most obvious one. This is simply a fight that Trump wants to have. Most polling indicates that Americans are in favor of adding a citizenship question to the census, regardless of whether it skews the results.

Even more important to the president is the fact that this issue lights up his base. Trump’s reelection campaign has been sending a fundraising email telling supporters: “The American People deserve to know who is in this country and there’s only one way to find out: We need to ask every person ‘ARE YOU AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, YES OR NO?’ ”

Attorney General William P. Barr claims he and the president have been working on a way to “clarify the record in time to add the question” to the 2020 Census. But in fact, it is already pretty clear what is going on here.

Republicans who once warned that the census could be manipulated for political gain are now giving us a master class in how to do it.

... the Commerce Dept and Wilbur Ross are legally tainted. They submitted a BS reason for adding the question. The USSC said they lied about their stated reason. So any new reason they would try to argue would also be contrived.

But Trump is a different person with arguably clean motives untainted by the first lie, legally.

He can submit a new justification designed to get USSC approval, and can argue that his justification is not linked to Ross's and therefore more likely to be seen with fresh eyes by the USSC.

This time, Trump can argue more honestly, that it's for drawing district lines, and they will find the truth (GOP friendly districts) permitted legally and not contrived.

And given the recent ruling about gerrymandering for partisan reasons allowed, this just might work.

Ross couldn't make this argument the first time, because the gerrymandering ruling hadn't been made yet. And can't make it now because his motives are tainted. But Trump can argue he's never made any argument but this.

But your idea raises a simple question:

On whose authority did Ross make the claims to the Supreme Court? He represented the Trump Administration as Secretary of Commerce the the Trump Department of Justice was in tandem. Weren't they representing Trump? If so, how could any new explanation for the census question be unrelated?

On further thought, with these criminals, does it matter?

They just need a clean ask that can be justified enough that Robert's believes it won't rile up the public against the USSC.

If he actually pursues this via executive order, I can't imagine a scenario that immediate an impeachment proceeding wouldn't be necessary and probably long overdue. He ignores the House with little concern of any real consequence outside of long, protracted court battles that are news for 24 hours. He wins the day via media even on his bad days. Maybe a few months of impeachment proceeding will change the trajectory of things and expose his criminality to those who are not paying attention. After all- Impeachment is a pretty big headline. Even with our new oversite in House, it's practically ignored or when we do get testimony it's a quick news cycle and he creates another distraction.
