Trump expected to end his fight to add citizenship question to census, sources say.
President Donald Trump is expected to announce later Thursday he is backing down from his effort to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census, and will instead take executive action that instructs the Commerce Department to obtain an estimate of U.S. citizenship through other means, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

(12,265 posts)The GOP wants that so they can limit the brown and black people which makes it easier for them to win.

(1,480 posts)It seems to me he is going to go ahead with his executive order. IMO, that's a much more dangerous course of action. And the statement that he is "ending the fight" is misleading and untrue.
Unless I'm missing something....

(1,480 posts)Apparently he is going to find a way outside of the census to question people's citizenship.
That might be worse....

President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive action Thursday directing the Commerce Department to obtain citizenship data through means other than the US census, according to two people with knowledge of the plan.
These people said Trump is expected to table his effort to add a question about citizenship status to the 2020 census, setting aside his demands last week to continue pursuing the issue despite a Supreme Court order blocking it.

Since the worst thing in the world for him is the appearance of failure, he will then give up, pretend he didn't give up, and throw out more chaff and countermeasures that don't fool anyone.

(13,556 posts)which was the point of the question - not "protecting voting rights". Which I thought was a bizarre argument.
I wonder how the RWers would feel if some politico put a gun ownership question on the census form.
