President Trump is not on board with a potential Senate bid by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.).
Shelby told The Hill on Thursday that he has discussed a potential Sessions candidacy, and the Senate race more broadly, with Trump, but that the president was "not encouraging" about the former Cabinet official and longtime senator making a bid for his old seat.
"I did talk to [Sessions]. I talked to the president about it to ... about if Sessions ran, he was not encouraging," Shelby said. "How do I say it? He was not on board, OK?"
Though Shelby said he previously discussed the Alabama Senate race with Trump recently, the president's feedback on a potential bid by Sessions, his first Senate supporter, appears to be previously unreported.
Asked if the president explained why he wasn't supportive of a potential Sessions bid, Shelby declined to discuss the details of their conversation, saying he didn't want to "get into that."

(11,949 posts)Goodness knows I detest Sessions and everything he believes. His view of he constitution ands its meaning if foreign to my way of thinking. He thinks the Civil Rights act is unconstitutional and would happily bring back segregated schools and Jim Crow.
But Ill give him this. He stood against the politicization of the DOJ and in the end it cost him his job. He at least had some kind of understanding of the limits on the power of the Executive Branch. And despite his regressive reading of the constitution he at least honored it in his slimy way.
I cant imagine Barr being in there when we did not at least control the House. He is a true Christian Authoritarian. And a total boot licker to trump. He is on record not being a fan of real democracy and I believe he sees the constitution as now read as in opposition to his goals.
He is a radical catholic who distrust democracy and favors a Christian based nation.
Fortunately we can limit the damage for another 18 months. But have to win in 2020.
