Simona Halep beats Serena in straight sets 6-2; 6-2. Serena was outplayed big time.
I so wanted Serena to win but Simona deserved this and I must say that I do like Halep.

(6,212 posts)Simona played brilliantly. She deserved to win for the way she played.

(34,476 posts)Incredibly well.

(269,157 posts)She literally won the match for herself - Serena's 24 unforced errors did her in.

(34,476 posts)his usual partner, Herbert, decided to play with Andy Murray instead.

(269,157 posts)incredulity. Still I genuinely like her - I have observed her in the stands watching others play - that speaks to loving the sport.

(53,843 posts)She's so good and gets to the finals now but the younger finalists are a bit too much for her now.

(269,157 posts)Serena came into this tournament after a knee injury with no match practice. That she reached the final is amazing in and of itself. Simona beat her today -hard to say but it's that simple.

(53,843 posts)still get the record. But even if she doesn't she's had a great run and is the GOAt imo.

(5,275 posts)Not shocked by the result but a bit surprised it was at 2 both sets.
Halep clearly outplayed her.
Time waits for nobody. Serena has been a great player but it has to be getting harder and harder for her to win these things.
malaise
(269,157 posts)I still hope she has one more slam in her - US Open next

(12,904 posts)But she played so well! Her serve and return game have improved 50%. Especially the serve.
Couple that with great movement on the court, and you have a recipe for success. Very graciously accepted, as well.
Well done, Simona!
Congratulations also to Serena Williams (my favorite) on reaching the final!

(269,157 posts)Kudos to her.
You know Serena is my favorite

(34,119 posts)until recently. I have never been a fan of Serena, love Venus and her attitude. I was thrilled to see this match and hope that Simone can keep it up and be happy with all the changes she has made to get herself here.
Beautiful win for Halep and she seemed to be genuinely thrilled. She won it all by herself, a stunning match for her.
malaise
(269,157 posts)and yes Simona won this one for herself - three unforced errors versus 24 after losing nine of 10 times speaks for itself. It was a great win for someone who genuinely deserved it.
That said I was rooting for Serena and #24.

(34,119 posts)I have no problem with people liking her and rooting for her. I just do not like her. Truth be told, I used to have to deal frequently with a woman who acted and talked like her. Now this woman was a horrible person, I am certain there is some of that in there as well.
Ahh we all have our people we love. I love Federer and you do too I think but IIRC you like Nadal more? I do not care for Nadal but he has grown on me the last few years. None of it really matters, it entertains us and helps us strive for new heights just by watching them work for it.
Good luck tomorrow whoever you support. I don't know how long Serena is going to keep this up. I would love to see her get the 24 and put that old bigot Margaret Court in her place.
Tomorrow I'm rooting for New Zealand in the cricket World Cup Final

(34,119 posts)to the NZ team along with yours then they cannot lose right? I have never watched cricket. Perhaps I should give it a try? I have always thought it looked interesting. Good luck.

(269,157 posts)Neither England nor New Zealand have ever won but I use the title of American Mike Marqusee's book title - Anyone but England. He was a great cricket fan and left the US for England during the Vietnam War - worked with the Labour Party. He wrote some great books on the politics of cricket. He died a few years ago.
