So this weekend was the big drop off for the special summer session, she made it!
(ugh, what a drive from Lake Tahoe to Oakland then to PaloAlto & back yesterday and then home today! - get to do it all again NEXT weekend!!)
The 24-hour update is that the cafeteria food sucks and it's hot and smelly in the dorms, very far to walk between buildings, and she is starting a petition/protest to get them to tun the AC on in the classrooms...
That's my girl!
She says "seriously, 225 kids paid $5000 each to be here, and they are telling us they can't do it cuz it COSTS too much?"
Welcome to law and govt baby

(15,015 posts)on a cost basis... except piss-poor design/planning.
Even in mid-July, it is possible to keep a building in Palo Alto, even large ones, completely comfortable without AC -- but it requires a) forethought/planning and b) the tolerance of the inhabitants for the same.
This weekend the temps were highs in the high-70s, lows in the high-50s. Adequately ventilate a building in the evening/overnight, button it up starting mid-morning, and generally you're fine even in mid-afternoon when external temps are at their peak...
But if you a) design a building to rely entirely on forced conditioned air with no external air exchange AND b) turn it off over the summer, then no duh are you gonna make people intolerably uncomfortable over the summer.
BTW Stanford building/property management have a shitty reputation in the local community for myriad reasons...

(13,366 posts)I sent her this thread so she could see your reply. It's supposedly an underground classroom so there are no windows.
But they could still open up the bldg in the early hours to get it aired out.... 225 students in a room like that sounds awful!
She's also a soft country girl, not used to the BIGNESS of it all...her feet are killing her from walking all over because all the buildings are so far away. I'm gonna send her some insoles and carwe package tonight fed ex!
Poor baby
Her "back is broken" from the hard beds in the dorm...she didn't eat last night because she was too tired to walk to the cafeteria...I'm guessing she will call me crying in about another 24 hours...
Gotta get used to the big world, chicka!

(21,675 posts)I'm in Sac and hate the Bay Area traffic so bad, I haven't been over the "new" Bay Bridge, it's been so long. Can't imagine having to make that trip from Tahoe and back, kudos!

(13,366 posts)poor thing, she's not used to walking 5 miles a day!
I figure I'll get a tearful call by tomorrow...
Gonna send her a care package fed-ex to try and make her feel better... maybe some insoles and chocolate

(22,450 posts)Actually, welcome to what you get with a for-profit education company. That profit isn't going to make itself!

(13,366 posts)...in general, all of it is for profit now...

(13,366 posts)She's getting college credits, experience, and something interesting for her resume & transcripts.
As much as we were bowled over for the amount, as a family we decided it was worth it for this amazing girl. She has known she wants to go into law/public policy since she was in 8th grade...wants to run for senate...so I am being as ultra supportive as possible!
