According to reports, British actor Lashana Lynch, who recently appeared as a fighter pilot in Captain Marvel, will be introduced as the new 007 in the next installment.
A film insider told Mail on Sunday that in the upcoming feature film she will be tracking Daniel Craigs character and bringing him out of retirement for a new mission.
The insider said: There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M [played by Ralph Fiennes] says, Come in 007', and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman.
Its a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but hes been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman.

(26,773 posts)The clear implication is that the role of James Bond will now be played by a female. That would be ridiculous of course.
I cant see why anyone would object to a retired Bond being replaced as 007 by a different character.

(16,646 posts)I don't mean the whole female Bond thing. I mean look at what Mr. Cooper wrote. He wrote about a fictional character that was basically a live action cartoon. He was a goof. He was a joke in many ways. He was a fantasy of a human that represented nothing of reality. And Mr. Cooper holds him up as some sort of model for excellence.
For far too long culture has accepted these absurd characters as some sort of model excellence. They aren't anymore than the road runner or Bugs Bunny. But people grow up accepting the various "action heros" as some sort of example of "how things should be". This isn't new. John Wayne made a career out of portraying absurd characters meant to represent some sort of reality. We've created the concept of the "super soldier" when in reality none exist or have ever existed. Robin Hood never existed. The Godfather was never someone to be admired. There is no John McClain, he would have been dead in minutes. These people aren't real, and don't represent reality.
Look, I can enjoy a bit of fantasy as much as the next person. But at the end of the movie, we're supposed to come back to reality.

(5,444 posts)You just destroyed a lot of peoples' reality bubbles.
Next, you will tell me that #45 ISN'T a rich, super smart businessman who can run the country like a business better than any politician?
But I agree, people who aren't sure of what their own reality looks like, might think of themselves as another James Bond, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel. Then they find out James Bond is a female?
The consequences will be dire!
Personally, I hope that any sex scenes will be handled a bit more maturely and realistically than in any previous Bond movies.
No, I hope there aren't any.

(20,529 posts)"I" wonder why Richard Cooper is so weak.
A true "Bond Girl".

(1,159 posts)Men like Richard Cooper have been weak their whole lives. Theyve been artificially propped up by images of Jesus and Santa Clause as white men and a whole host of white comic book superheroes. The election of Obama left them permanently triggered and fearful that in a world where they actually have to compete, people like Limbaugh and Trump would never make it out of the starting gate.
People like Cooper took comfort when Tom Cruise played The Last is Samurai, when Scarlett Johansson played the lead in Ghost of a Shell, but they are apoplectic that a black woman has been cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Theres actually a #notmyariel Twitter feed.
In short, adhering strictly to source material is critical to people like Cooper when the material coincidentally portrays white as right because they see those images as part of their HERITAGE. This is particularly true with the weakest of weak men like Cooper and Trump. Im their minds, James Bond, Jesus, Santa Clause and Ariel all MUST . . . BE . . . WHITE because, well, they just gotta.

(1,306 posts)They're not replacing James Bond, just expanding the lore to show that the agent designations are reassigned. I don't see where the indignation comes from.
Thumbs up from me.

(15,392 posts)But I think this lends credence to the theory that James Bond/007 is a code name for whatever MI6 agent at the time is reckless enough to do all the stupid/crazy shit they do to get the job done, and because of this, they have a relatively short shelf life (we only see the successful mission(s)) so there's no big blowback on MI6.

(5,042 posts)Shes only taking his 00 code, not his name, as far as we know.
Its being acknowledged Daniel Craig is still James Bond, but retired and without a 00 number.

(15,392 posts)Which they could have used previously in the Bond world - we don't know, or she could have said, "Yeah, fuck that shit. Just call me by my regular name," and the previous 007 was presumably smarter than his predecessors and retired. If he had been replaced by a man, that guy would be James Bond. Until then, even in retirement, he holds the title.
Theory holds.

(5,301 posts)But what I said about the Black Little Mermaid is also on point:
My biggest hope is that they write and direct a good movie this time (unlike so many of the "reimaginings" ), because if they don't produce a good movie, and it tanks, they're going to blame the casting and not the product.

(58,726 posts)several movies. The "Bond" movies have gone so far away from the original books it's crazy. I don't bother to catch them any more, usually.
Movies in general are just a bunch of special effects, explosions and shit. Throw in how expensive they are now and I don't go to them.
Richard Cooper grew up watching James Bond's misogynistic shenanigans and it clearly didn't do him any harm!
I also grew up watching James Bond and I loved those movies -- when I was a kid and didn't know any better. Looking back at them now they are mostly just embarrassing.
Excellence. Focus. Competency.
James Bond.

(9,896 posts)like a great way to glom off a zillion dollar franchise while at the same time placating the clamoring masses by adding Identity X, Identity Y and Identity Z in a semi-acceptable way (it's not REALLY James Bond) and all while not coming up with a single new idea.
White guys shouldn't be upset about this stuff, it's just more of the non-white, non-guy portions of the population wanting to play - white guy characters.

(33,419 posts)It's Craig's last Bond role. She'll die heroically and tragically; he'll come out of "retirement" and reassume the number. End credits.
I know Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing it, but the standard tropes will apply in the end.
Everyone calm down. It's just another movie.

Of course the men whining that Bond, 007, or any particular character who has previously been portrayed as a man must always be played by a man will still whine because their weak psyche depends on fictional characters with whom they identify.
