Go back and watch the despicable footage. Trump is slagging on Rep. Omar when a half-hearted "Send her back" chant begins and peters out. Trump jumps on the tail end of the chant to make several incendiary statements about Omar. The chant starts up again, louder and with more people joining in. It waxes to a crescendo for those famous 13 seconds while Trump stands silently, a slight smirk flashing across his insipid mug.

The chant will almost certainly happen again, and Trump will justify himself later by saying there was nothing he could do to restrain the spontaneous outburst from his enthusiastic fans. That will be the rankest bullshit. I was at a soccer match earlier this year with some of the most partisan fans in the country (yeah, Portland; no pity). The referee missed a call and the booster section started to chant "Ref, you suck!" with gusto. Two of the section leaders down front, without microphones, each put up a hand and shook their heads. The chant died almost immediately.
