physical destruction and deaths of people buried under tons of concrete and steel.

Try "shutdwon" or ?inorperable". I read that hedline with dread and reached for the phone to call relatives and friends there before I read further.

Only about 20% of NYC subway is elevated and the bedrock in which most of it lies doesn't just "collapse", barring some cataclysmic event. Whatever the nature of that huge event, it would dominate the headlines like you've never seen before and the state of the subway would be the least of the city's problems.
