Miss Michigan stripped of title after racist tweets surface

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/miss-michigan-stripped-of-title-after-racist-tweets-surface/

Miss Michigan Kathy Zhu has been stripped of her title after several insensitive and racist tweets surfaced. The 20-year-old received an email Friday from the pageant removing her from her position.

"It has been brought to the attention of Miss World America 'MWA' that you social media accounts contain offensive, insensitive and inappropriate content," the letter said.

It also said that Zhu no longer meets the requirement of "being in good character." "Therefore, and effective immediately, MWA does not recognize you as a participant of any sort or in any capacity as it relates to any and all events of MWA," it concluded.

According to screenshots obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, the first tweet said, "There is a 'try a hijab on' booth at my college campus. So you're telling me that it's now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?"

"Did you know that the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks?" the second tweet said. "Fix problems within your own community first before blaming others."

The tweets were sent in 2017 and 2018, but have since been deleted.

Zhu pushed back in a Twitter video Friday, claiming discrimination against her conservative political views. "Little attacks like those really, really diminishes the value and the trust of the word, 'racism,'" she said.

Zhu is a University of Michigan student, majoring in political science. She is an avid Donald Trump supporter on social media and the vice president of the College Republicans group at her school.

She will no longer go on to represent Michigan in the Miss World America pageant in Las Vegas.

Despite the backlash, Zhu said she stands by her old tweets. "I am glad this story came to light because this is more than just some beauty pageant, this is about the prejudice views against people with 'different opinions,'" she tweeted Friday.

Yep, poor little racist right winger is being discriminated against because an organization doesn't want to be associated with bigotry.

With employers now checking out potential employee's social media posts, I think a lot of young people getting ready to enter the job market might be in for a shock. If they get an interview, they might be trying to explain away 'youthfully indiscrete' activities and proclamations.

because she'd contracted to limit her public behavior to what was appropriate to the role she accepted, and in breaking her contract she not only caused harm to the other party but is no longer able to fulfill her agreement. Contract canceled.

As you say, there will be other consequences to freely speaking her mind -- as always -- but the big thing new about that is the astronomical explosion in the number and societal and geographic distributions of people she was free-speaking to.

Hard lesson for a rather stupid and irresponsible adolescent who apparently hadn't taken it seriously when it was explained before.

far more of ignorance and the kind of normal tribal bigotry a large majority from all cultures and races are both wired to by genetics and brought up with than of malice. Malice frightens me.

The business that puts on this thing took a kid from her small, insular circles and put her on a world stage even though her intellectual attainments and cultural awareness very obviously weren't up to being thrown into that. The adult professionals who set her up for this don't have that excuse. They know the gloss of sophistication worn by adolescent beauty contestants isn't sophistication. They should have interviewed and chosen more ethically and responsibly themselves.

What stands out, for me, is this is a woman who is, most likely, marginalized and maligned by the very people/political group that she's following. Perhaps her ego and need for attention takes precedence over her common sense and attachment to the current reality. It smacks of a desperate need to be recognized as unique and special.

I do really love the 'gloss of sophistication' descriptive.

are probably not exactly uncommon among beauty contestants.

Tendencies to bias toward those who are "different" and ethnocentrism are human characteristics, so I never wonder when someone who just happens to belong to a minority in our country displays bigoted attitudes toward other groups. Or why. We know why. Bias is wired in genetically and affected by environment, but mercifully to extremely varying degrees and mitigatable in most.

Now, on looking up Ms. Zhu's age, 19-20, so in middle adolescence, I read she supports Trump and is tweeting defiantly that she's on her way to Fox.

What on EARTH were these pageants thinking of not to weed her out? Or to offer her a contract that requires "good character"? They've gotten very trashy, and it seems that's also a reflection of the people running them, who may themselves be incapable of evaluating for it.

I'm pretty shocked they aren't doing that, already. Where I worked, we were warned that if we disparaged the company, in any way, via our social media accounts, it was grounds for firing. That told me they had someone spending time looking for, and checking out employee's posts.

were too busy deciding on the announcers' evening gowns and colors for the swim suits to get to it.

I'm old enough to remember the 1970s when, swimsuit competition and all the rest of the sexist orientation that was already being protested aside, the Miss America pageant was generally considered respectable and nice. (And if it wasn't always there was no internet to make sure everyone knew it. The National Inquirer was for people with a taste for that.) Contestants from New England often were obviously chosen to include characteristics that outweighed physical imperfections, while southern girls were typically drop-dead gorgeous. The wholesome Midwest look was a real thing, and the color barrier had been broken. We watched it every year we were home.

We haven't watched it or any others, though, since they kicked out Bert Parks, changed standards and style, and the pageant lost its no doubt illusory innocence. We then shook our heads for years at how we could miss Parks and his painfully dreadful singing. But we did, and what he'd come to symbolize.

I went to find the year of the first black contestant (1971) and found this history. The pictures are fun.

with a right-winger that couldn't get it through his head that a corporation firing somebody for being an egregious racist isn't violating his free speech.

(forgot which right winger it was, as this seems to be a common occurrence)

The person in question likely signed a contract that said he could be fired "at will" when he got hired or was in the paperwork he signed when he got hired that if he did something that cast the company in a bad light, he could be terminated.

about the principles underlying liberalism -- because liberalism is evil and without principles -- and would passionately deny that free speech had anything to do with it. Religious conservatives these days are cutting liberals -- and established legal principles -- out of the equation entirely by claiming the Constitution and Bill of Rights are God's latest addition to the Bible.

At least the right admits the wicked demons' spawn of liberalism and liberals exist. That's more than the far left will do. There're them and Democratic conservatives ...and probably some others farther right, those Trump people?

they're running this country now and that their acting out has become something they can get away with again. I'm imagining corporations all over the nation sending HR and other managers to seminars on how to disabuse employees of this notion before they act, requiring them to read the employee manual not enough.

The words you type on Twitter are written in indelible ink? Gosh!

You mean words have real meaning and if you don't choose carefully, they can bite you back? Gosh, again!

But thank Donny. With his propensity to smear, belittle and vilify people who aren't like him (white and rich), those who object to that are sensitized to the whole thing and making a real effort to distance themselves. In the old days, her comments would have passed as unfortunate and immature but garnered no reaction.

At 20, a person's never known a Republican Party that was mostly regarded as simply conservative and wasn't overtly racist and xenophobic. I can see the party's slide deeper and deeper into the muck sneaking up on older people but a 20 year old who's active politically couldn't NOT know exactly what she was getting into.
