What we know now about the whole sordid mess, is probably the total we will know.
August is upon us and not long after that we have the LaborDay weeks-long "holiday"... Then we have Veteran's Day time offsies..and then Thanksgiving..and of course Christmas ..and during all this there is campaigning/debating.etc.And of course, primaries are next in line.
There is just no more time. Republicans "win the day" because they never wait. They would have jumped in with both feet, the day after the inauguration.
The path of hearings/investigations/court proceedings works in the outside world, but it no longer works in government because of Fox News/Facebook/Twitter etc.
If Trump loses, he will pardon everyone he has ever known, convicted or possibly to be convicted.
He will even play the poor ole me card and pardon himself.
Any cases currently under way will be "ended".
We will never see his taxes.
No one will indict him. He's an old man.. a crook to be sure, but I don't see a new admin wanting any "hangovers".We are democrats and that's the way we roll.
The FBI/CIA/NSC/e-i-e-i-o will need to be rebuilt, the ACA will have to be resurrected. NASA/NOAA/EPA/..Basically, a new president will be starting at square one, with all the former history being long trashed by Trumpo.
There will be so much work to do, so much carnage to fix, this will fade away...shades of Iran Contra/the Iraq war shenanigans.
I will be long gone before the echos of this mess will rear its ugly head again.
It WILL come back to haunt us, but by then who knows what dire straits we will be in due to climate change.
Only republicans latch onto their prey and never let go.
If you changed the party from r to d, a democrat would have been impeached and removed from office by Feb 15 2017.
Rules are for democrats. The republicans are wild eyed barbarians taking no prisoners.EVER.
In races that are do-able, people just need to be told that republicans are vile cheaters who think it's ok to cheat on a wife, cheat on taxes, remove people from voting rolls willy-nilly, use outdated voting machinery, do business with enemies, give state secrets to enemies, skim money off the government for their own use. It's ok to NEVER tell the truth. It's ok to pay off mistresses, and to "pal around with pedophile sex traffickers".
We have to have some short, easy to understand talking points that define who republicans are..and we need to remind people every time we can.
They cleverly adopt short, pithy, easy to repeat slogans, and we need powerpoint displays to explain stuff..
The days of explaining are sadly behind us. Someone said once that if you are explaining you are losing.

(34,111 posts)We never learn. If we had started putting these assholes in jail where they belonged starting with Nixon (that is the first one I really remember) this would not be like this. I am sick to death of them (the Dems) shirking their duties to cover their own butts by saying "we (the citizens) should not have to go through this, it would be hard on the country". Yeah, some little people go to jail but the big bad king pins always get away. THAT certainly makes us feel grand.
Hard on the country? Not before this it would not have been, we would have felt like things moved for the big shots like it does for us and we would have held them all accountable and likely there would never have BEEN a Trump or even a Dubya with his Cheney. Now holding them accountable looks like it will create a civil war. That should not be.
I am so sick of this. I had a long conversation with one of my sons. I am so sad and sick for the younger people. He has worked so hard, has his preferred profession that he does but he also works construction as well. He likes doing both but he fears none of that would be enough if he ever gets married and wants a family. He actually does not count on much of a future other than constantly struggling. It is sad to hear and hard to argue.
but starting with Robert E Lee (just saying)

(34,111 posts)I was pretty brain shot when I wrote that and could barely think back at all.
Powerful men protecting powerful men seems to be almost always the case from whenever they figured out how to get away with it for such a long time.
Time is up.
Thanks for the correction. I did know there were more but I think I did not even want to go there when I wrote this. I also wanted to add the word white in front of men but thought we were all feeling bad enough and took that out, it can be parsed and parsed again and more could feel bad but most everyone here did not need that at the time and probably could do a more complete job of it anyway.

(14,577 posts)Republicans are the party of illusion. In everyone's life, at some point or another, there is a decision point where they look at a fork in the spiritual road and either decide on the path of avarice, pride, envy, wrath, sloth, gluttony and lust, or the path of light, love, kindness and noble spirit.
I don't know how to make them change. The only thing (one) I can change is me. What am I doing? Where am I going? What am I trying to achieve.
Ah, well..........let's roll over the racist assholes this next election. That will be a start.

(10,011 posts)Impeachment is dead. So, on to 2020. I dont like the Republican scorched-earth tactics, but they work, especially when we have a media that often has Republicans on their shows lying through their teeth. Republicans have no problem with whats legal or untruthfulthe point is to win at any cost. I dont want Dems to turn into attack dogs exactly, but we need some strong spokespeopleprobably not in governmentwho are unafraid to make bold claims and go after Republican lies. For example, the day the Mueller report was released and it was clear that Barr had lied, if the parties were reversed, Republicans would have had press conferences, gone on every political show, screamed bloody murder at the top of their lungs and stated immediate impeachment proceedings. And they would have been right to do so.
I want some Democrats who are a bit less courteous. Tom Perez seems like milquetoast and is ineffective as far as Ive seen. I love Stacy Abrams. Shed be great as head of the DNC and a national spokesperson. Or will we give Trump and Republicans months to claim no collusion and complete exoneration while we fight months long court battles to get people to testify? Even if they succeed, no one will pay attention. Voters have turned to other issues.

(43,409 posts)How? There never would have been 67 votes in the Senate. Also, it is literally impossible, even if the Rethugs had 67 seats and control of the House, for full blown impeachment and then a full trial to happen in 25 days. They would need official charges of legitimate high crimes and misdemeanours. They cannot just impeach and remove simply to overturn an election result, as that is unconstitutional. If they tried we would have a civil war, literally.

(5,499 posts)We never have had the votes in the Senate to convict. So impeaching Trump would have just been symbolic. And you are correct that he is old. I'm sure if he loses in 2020 he will be the biggest asshole former president ever until he dies. If he wins in 2020 the country will be a mess if you live in a red state. Congress will continue to be gridlocked. The economy will go south and unemployment will skyrocket.

(28,264 posts)Like I've said over and over here at DU: the Democratic leadership's insistence on adhering to a set of good conduct rules---rules which the Republicans threw away decades ago---will allow trump to goose-step his merry way into a second term. Hell, we can't even get motivated to take to the streets en masse, like they did in Puerto Rico, with the end result being the resignation of a piece-of-shit governor. Profoundly depressing. trump's repeated offenses hand us opportunities on a silver platter, and we let those opportunities slip away. I guess we deserve the results we get. History will not be kind to us.
