The truth about what Dershowitz said in a 1997 editorial about lowering the age of consent.

He did NOT say it should be lowered to 16, as he's implying now.

He said it “certainly should not be as high as 17 or 16” and that 15 might be an “appropriate compromise,” since reasonable people could disagree about whether it should be as low as 14.


His exact words are below:

“Based on the demographic criteria the age of consent should be lowered. It certainly should not be as high as 17 or 16. Reasonable people can disagree over whether it should be as low as 14. Fifteen would seem like an appropriate compromise. Perhaps there should be staircasing below 15 with the penalty increasing inversely with the age of the victim.”
