Thank goodness for the union

I’m off because company says I cannot work. One day they saw me limping and asked why I told them sciatica. As my foot is numb sciatica it’s getting better. And I understand being yard jockey company position, so I can sign up short term disability and then unemployment. Now local management is cool I produced all doc notes.
But corporate out of jersey is like assholes. As in if he cannot work fire him he did this outside of work and is calling off everyday. That’s rules I have call in every day let them know my foot is numb, so I turned all basket of poo over to my union steward he laughed and said corporate games in my grievance I included with it copies of doc notes return work no restrictions.

Local company says I cannot work their company doc says I cannot work. But my doctor says I can. And for 2 hours wages dues a month I’ll let the union fight it out. Not the first time I’ve been on chopping block but union is always fighting for the members.

most do not, and there is no federal law requiring employers provide sick leave. (Hint to our presidential candidates)

Obviously you work in a state that does not have a sick leave law and having a union to negotiate sick leave for you is pretty much a must.

Having a sick leave policy actually benefits companies in that if people don't get paid for being sick they are going to come to work sick and infect the rest of the work place.

For most any injury or illness without a hassle. I don't think it was law, it was just that Unions were so strong that in order to avoid unions in their workplace, they offered the same benefits.

I never went to work sick back then.

Now a days, you are lucky just to keep your job if you're sick in bed.

As Dad use to say, the union helped put food on our table. More importantly, they fought tooth and nail to protect retiree benefits years after Dad retired. So, for those who subscribe to the stereotype, I say for every Jimmy Hoffa there's thousands of stories like my father's.

Union membership increases as you get further from Mexico. Az is a right to work state.
So when a big job came to Ft. Huachuca and we all learned it was a union outfit,
many were reluctant to join. The union would be taking a good chunk out of our
payroll checks. The guys argued that it was a right to work state and the company
replied that the job was on a federal base, not actually a state.
So I joined local # 1 bricklayers union. Went to a few rowdy meetings up in
Tucson. The union demanded that we pay for Humana insurance, many guys
said they already had insurance, but, of course, the union prevailed.
I was made job steward--it cost me my position as foreman.
But when the twins came, and the ex-wife's insurance only paid a small
amount of the big bill (they were premies), Humana stepped in and paid
over 20 grand.
If I were you, I'd grab the fishing pole and load up boog and head to the lake.
One of those twins, now 26, reports to Ft Benning today.
