Canada man, key player in human smuggling at Peace Arch border crossing, pleads guilty

A Vancouver, B.C., man, accused of playing a major role helping Chinese emigres "jump the border" at the Peace Arch, on Monday pleaded guilty in a British Columbia courtroom to four counts of human smuggling.

Michael Kong, 62, was charged with helping bring 34 Chinese migrants north over the border, after which most flew to Ontario and filed refugee claims in Etobicoke near Toronto.

But Kong is suspected of helping hundreds cross the U.S.-Canada border through the Peace Arch Park that straddles the border. The emigres were told to "smile" and "be natural" as they walked from the U.S. into Canada.

"Electronic ledgers --- or 'score sheets' -- found in Michael Kong's home listed the names of more than 900 foreign nationals believed to have been smuggled between 2011 and 2016, according to investigators," the National Post reported.
