his two closest allies in Congress have been McCain and Leiberman, the Statler and Waldorf of the U.S. Senate:

But maybe he actually cares more about the future of his party than about telling kids to get off the damn lawn; stranger things have happened.

They reject and dismiss any modern understanding of it. "Politically correct" language is not a legitimate concern. He probably sees nothing wrong with what he says.

Manipulating the working white male with hate and fear to vote against their own economic interest is a central pillar of the Republican Party.

He is a so called "moderate" Repub, though next to Dems he is pretty right wing. But I think guys like him and Lugar know that the tea party was gonna screw with the Repubs eventually. The demos of that group are older white men. As the country's demos change, the Repub party could be left behind. This race is only close because Romney dominates with older white voters.

He's still in the mix, rather than being retired focibly (Lugar) or voluntarily (Snowe), but I think he's now to the left of his party's base and he knows it. He's up for re-election in 2014, and you can bet the Teahadists will go after him just like they did with Lugar and Bennett.

The Repubs will have taken out all of the moderates of their party by then.

What's the crowd angry about? It doesn't really matter-- the anger is just a wave that can be ridden to power. If there were enough people angry about us having too many pumpkin pies, you can rest assured that the charlatans would be devoted, life-long champions of the plum pie cause.

If today's froth-at-the-mouth issues aren't going to pave their way to power next year, they'll stop caring about those things next year.
