Woman with bionic eye regains part of her vision; New retinal impant being tested in several patient

Just call her The Bionic Woman. Dianne Ashworth, who suffers from severe blindness due to a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa, can see again thanks to a bionic device doctors implanted in her eye.

Dianne Ashworth, who suffers from severe blindness due to a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa, can see again thanks to a bionic device doctors implanted in her eye.

"This is a world first," said Dr. Penny Allen, who led the surgery.

Ashworth is the first patient to receive the device, which she was fitted with in May by researchers at the Royal Victorian Eye and ear hospital.

The “pre-bionic” implant was then switched on in July after she had fully recovered from the surgery.
