Yeah, I know that's an overwrought extrapolation, but sometimes I do imagine us hiding away from all public spaces for fear of our pervasive, violent gun culture.

Perhaps that's as it should be. This is a local story. All malls are not dangerous places to go to. Just as all public schools are not dangerous, and for all the coverage given to the genuine terrible events that have occurred, the vast majority of students will never be involved in a school shooting, and I keep on reading things that say that the "active-shooter drills" do more harm than good and simply instill unwarranted terror in children and teachers.

(5,524 posts)I'm talking about instituting a hefty bullet tax and tax on owning guns. You can keep them, but prepare to pay. Either that, or sell them to a buyback program. We can tax most Americans' guns out of existence. If you want to own a gun that isn't heavily taxed, it has to have a magazine of 4 bullets or less. Breaking these laws would be a Federal offense, and you would be banned from owning guns ever again.
It's way past time to end this.

"The poor would be taxed out of owning a firearm" - That is the idea. I would like owning a gun to be expensive and out of reach for most people except for serious hobbyists and hunters.
Crunchy Frog
(26,636 posts)Just because an activity is protected by the Constitution, doesn't mean that you won't have to spend money to engage in that activity. Nobody's giving away printing presses, or TV stations either.
The taxes should be used to pay medical expenses for victims of random gun violence. I would imagine poor people are especially hard hit by those regressive costs.

SCOTUS would kill it ...and rightfully so

(653 posts)Make it so expensive if you want a gun, you have to pay and also carry mandatory liability insurance. If your gun is stolen because of your lack of security then you are liable for a huge fine and civil suit by the injured parties.

The Reichstag fire (German: Reichstagsbrand, About this soundlisten (help·info)) was an arson attack on the Reichstag building, home of the German parliament in Berlin, on Monday 27 February 1933, precisely four weeks after Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. Hitler's government stated that Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch council communist, was found near the building, and they attributed the fire to communist agitators in generalthough a German court decided later that year that Van der Lubbe had acted alone, as he claimed. After the fire, the Reichstag Fire Decree was passed. The Nazi Party used the fire as a pretext that communists were plotting against the German government, and the event is considered pivotal in the establishment of Nazi Germany. The term "Reichstag fire" has come to refer to false flag actions facilitated by an authority to promote their own interests through popular approval of retribution or retraction of civil rights.
