Boy Scout scandal could be bigger than Catholic Church crisis

The Boy Scouts of America are continuing to cover-up a "pedophilia epidemic within their organization," a group of lawyers alleged Tuesday in a new lawsuit.

The Abused in Scouting lawyers said they've identified 350 previously unknown scoutmasters and volunteers who allegedly preyed on boys — and whose names were not known to law enforcement or in the BSA's internal database, which critics have called "perversion files."

"You can't look at these files and not come to the conclusion that this was a massive problem that was hidden," attorney Tim Kosnoff said at a press conference.

"We know that when a pedophile abuses a victim, it's not just one," added attorney Stewart Eisenberg. "So each of the 350 abusers have dozens of other victims who have not come forward."

I was both a Catholic and a Boy Scout but never was molested. Guess I was lucky.

Hierarchy and lay supporters, especially in the legal profession. I never joined the Scouts but my brother in law was a Catholic boy scout right up to adulthood, and he used to talk about certain individuals that the cuter ones used to avoid being anywhere near....and this was the 70s/80s.

6. I have a YMCA recollection of

going, as a kid, to the "Y" for swimming lessons where all the kids, but none of the instructors, were required to be naked in the pool. Now, nothing happened to me and AFAIK, nothing happened to any of the kids but I wonder now, in view of what has happened at the Catholic church and Boy Scouts, what it was all about and, if they (the YMCA) still have that rule.

9. Not just the Y. Supposedly the concern was that lint from wool swim suits would clog up the pools.

But non-wool suits were available in the 1920's, and this policy continued till the 60's and even 70's.

And girls were required to wear suits!

Beam explains that the first recreational indoor pool in America opened in the Brooklyn YMCA in New York in 1885. Because swimsuits back then were made of wool, and their fibers would clog the pool’s relatively unsophisticated filtration systems, nude swimming was enforced to make sure the pool didn’t break.

By the 1920s, there were other, more comfortable swimming alternatives that didn’t shed fibers. However, nude swimming continued. The rationale this time around was that nude swimming was more hygienic. I asked Beam how so.

“There was the visual inspection,” he says, noting that part of the aquatic director’s job duty was to inspect the men before they jumped into the pool. The inspectors weren’t just checking for venereal diseases. The idea was to look for any open wounds or other indications that the swimmer might have some infectious disease.

For over half a century, no one really seemed to question the nudity rules. After all, America had a surprisingly laissez-faire attitude toward nudity—at least for the boys. Girls, on the other hand, were always required to wear full suits. In 1941, Life magazine published a photo of young boys in a shower as part of a spread on the concept of democracy.

10. I don't understand why anyone is surprised

Pedophiles ALWAYS seek employment/volunteer at facilities that provide them with prey...and they sometimes get PAID to be in close proximity to kids.

It always disgusts me when there is so much "outrage" when one of them finally gets caught and how so many people (pretend) to be surprised.

Not every priest/pastor/scout leader/sports coach/youth volunteer/piano teacher/etc etc etc is a pedophile, but any parent who turns over their child to someone and gives the adult HOURS and HOURS of time with their kid, may end up spending a lifetime of regret for their lack of attention to the person they gave their child to.

And for you single moms with adolescent kids, any new man who "gets along famously and immediately" with your kids, and is exorbitantly generous and loving to YOU...you might want to investigate a LOT before you fall in love and trust him with your kids. Pedophiles "hunt" for women like you, with built in targets.
