The Amazon streaming series "The Boys" would please a lot of tastes here

Last edited Fri Aug 9, 2019, 12:58 AM - Edit history (1)

Its most basic premise is similar to "Watchmen" in that it underscores whether the idea of superheroes is as wonderful as many would like to believe. The corruption of power is omnipresent and omniscient. The series takes straight aim at politic skulduggery, the military-industrial complex, corporate control of government and paths to autocratic systems.

The production values are good as are the actors. It's worth a look-see but definitely for adults.

14. I totally understand that sentiment. I've had to prioritize things I let into my head these days.

I cannot even listen to half my music these days due to where my head's at.

and depressingly predictable for me. I tried, but there was nothing redeemable in any of the characters so I never felt any connection to them. Without some emotional attachment or interest there was no point to continue watching.

7. This is from the same team that does Preacher on AMC.

Both are based on Garth Ennis comics, and he's part of the team for both shows.

Seth Rogen is an executive producer of both, and writes and directs.

Also on board for both is Evan Goldberg.

Preacher deals with diabolical supernaturals. The Boys deals with diabolical superheroes ["supes"]. Preacher digs at the underpinnings of religious belief, and basically rips it to shreds. The Boys seems to be doing a similar thing with the themes misanthrope mentions above.

Both deal with dark, dystopian worlds, but presented with a quirky, humorous twist. Both are graphically violent. Both are definitely "adults only." Both have high production values, state of the art visual effects, and great acting, directing, and writing (if you like Seth Rogen's sense of humor).

They aren't for everyone, but if you like this kind of show, they are both well-done.

It's more of the anti super hero movie.

Not that I mind Marvel, but I think the general public is largely unaware that there's a good percentage of comic book fans that detest most Marvel comics, stories, and movies. This is a dark and refreshing break from the canned script of the Marvel Universe movies.

It's really well done, the characters are so imperfect and broken, they're written in a way to make you on edge or even annoyed when they are on screen. Homelander is one of the best written and most terrifying villains in a long time. Probably a much closer to reality look at what the world would be like if Super Humans existed.

The scene where Starlight first meets the Deep is disturbing, but not nearly as disturbing as the comic book version of that where she is assaulted by Homelander, the Deep, and A-Train violently.

for an agenda. Belief in our government is our enemies' biggest target for destruction. Our battered fortress.

12. It's possible to believe in the capacity of the structure for self-governance

while still being highly skeptical of the individuals who seek and hold positions of power. I would go far as to say self-governance doesn't work well without that skepticism. We must be our own watchdogs.

been lead and trained to assume Democrats in government are bad unless proven otherwise. But they're never lead to the "otherwise," just to attack. All for the highest principles, of course. Most dangerous, they're augmented by the dangerously self-destructive power of the many millions who've never cared enough to bother and use the same, morally depraved "they're all the same" argument to excuse their fecklessness.

You talk of WATCH-DOGGING, but actually checking out individual legislators to learn the truth? That's the last thing wanted of them, or by them. After all, why would those who recognize truths others can't -- and who've been trained to abandon skepticism -- bother?

The biggest delusions of all are that their attacks are somehow very different from the trumpsters going after Democrats. And that the end goal of keeping the liberal progressive Democrats already in office from getting control away from the Republicans is a wise and necessary one. And of course they never understand that they have become a huge, self destructive part of the problem.

I have loved Karl Urban since "Xena". It had some really interesting undertones. I am glad it got a 2nd season. Though, there is one thing I need to check, because I possibly missed something and if I am right, it is disturbing.

this whole superhero culture and comics as great literature. Telling kids they each have a superpower r as ther than teaching them that we are all just ordinary humans who must cooperate to create a working society is an associated issue. It's right up there with Barbie culture in creating unrealistic images in costumes.

I want a good sci-fi movie to watch without a comic book behind it.
