Should I go to the protest later? Trump's fundraiser is about 20 miles down...

the road from me, and the usual suspects are staging a protest. It will be by the old windmill in Water Mill, far enough from the festivities that Trump will never see it.

I really should go, but at least 10 of that 20 miles is normally at a dead stop on Fridays in the summer, and can't be any better tomorrow. Besides, when the shindig is over and he leaves that trail of slime behind him, will anyone even notice we were there? I've been to a lot of protests over the years, and even the huge one in DC before Junior's Gulf war redux meant nothing.

I am fascinated by the numbers,of course. It's $100,000 to get in the door and a quarter million to meet The Man. The quarter million also gets you lunch and a a chair at The Meeting. The meeting is ostensibly about some urgent policy something or other. The real purpose of it, of course, is to make it an official Presidential Function so your taxes can "legitimately" pick up the entire bill. (Take that, Bernie, Beto, and the rest of you with your stacks of fives and twenties.) My Congressman, Lee the Snake Zeldin will be there, and I think Lindsay Graham is showing up.

I've got better ways to deal with Zeldin, though, and I can't think of any reason to care about Graham. My dream would be to have that spare half mil lying around so I could buy a seat at the table and piss in the punch bowl before kicking Trump square in the balls.

Or would that be too childish?

1. I don't think you would get close to the event.

That might be worth thinking about.

Even if you were rich, I don't think they would let you into a trump event. They vet everyone. It is a fun fantasy for you, though.

As Rhiannon noted downthread, we all should really try to get together more often.

I'm in Riverhead and often get to Southampton Democratic Club events. I've also got some connections with the Bridgehampton UU church and often get to their events.

And all the other stuff going on out here-- everything from Indivisible to Save the Sound.

he's still around. Every year he gets more support, and I'm not sure Gershon is the guy to get him out of here.

Zeldin is slick. He's got all the right answers to a lot of local concerns, like Plum Island, but little actual action.

If I had my druthers, one of the most popular politicians out here is Al Krupski who moved up from the Southold town board to the Suffolk County legislature. I don't remember the percentage, but he completely blew out the competition last time. It will take someone like him with deep roots out here to do the job.

3. If people you know are going, I'd consider it.

I went to the local protest we had here (Glens Falls) over the children locked in detention centers and it did create some awareness, made the front page of the local paper. And I ran into half a dozen people I knew, some were a surprise, and that was a good feeling. Though there were a handful of Trump supporters there including one loud guy with a megaphone, they were vastly outnumbered. I was very glad that I went.

I talked to several people I hadn't met, it was a great group, maybe one of them was you! Yes, we'll definitely have to plan to meet up next time - and as long as we're still stuck with Elise Stefanik, we know that there will be one - damn!

Thing is with this one, though, is that no one I know is going.

10. The ideal thing would be if other DUers were going

I just learned that redwitch was at the same protest and I had no idea! I talked to several people I hadn't met, maybe one of them was her, LOL. Maybe someone who's considering going will reply to this thread! That would be fun to have a mini DU meet up. I went to a couple around here quite some time ago, just a few people, but I really liked the others I met. Keep checking back!

Philadelphia, Boston, Vermont, and a few other places in the Northeast. Just about all of the people who used to hold or go to those have faded away, though.

Upthread there's a group going from Sag Harbor, and I am sorely tempted to run into them, but now other things are calling.

I miss those old meetups, and maybe we should try harder to get people together again.

What they are are a combination of contributions to Trump and to the RNC, but they can't be deducted as business expenses.

that it won't be charged to Trump's campaign, but the full cost will be on us. And Southampton.

Not that the costs couldn't be prorated, but we know better than to even hope for that.

"$100,000 to get in the door and a quarter million to meet The Man" Ultimately, that money comes our of our pockets.

If it were not for those people's money, Trump would still be hawking condos in Florida.

As brash as Trump the rule and tradition-breaker is, I'm surprised he doesn't hold these events in the Rose Garden or his nearby hotel in D.C., allowing more time for golf......

I do see the value in attending protests regardless because it allows us to connect eye-to-eye with fellow Democrats, a worthy emotional boost in these hard times.
