Despite the horrific tragedy, he seemed to be photographed surrounded by happy smiling people. Many, I assume, are medical professionals.
It seems out of character for these folks to be giving thumbs up and grinning like idiots.
What am I missing here?

(22,756 posts)happy people were primarily Dayton photos... the entire day (both Dayton and El Paso visits show a very sick man and disgusting people surrounding him))

There is nothing unusual about smiling or gesturing for a photograph.
Do these medical professionals seem insufficiently glum:
Is this another attempt at fake hospital employees?
There are people who are happy to pose for a photograph with the President of the United States. In a hospital staff of NNNN people, there is a significant percentage who are going to be thrilled to have their picture taken with Trump, and who are certainly going to jump at the opportunity to do so.

(24,653 posts)I know full well people will mug for the camera when a celebrity of any kind is around for a photo and don't really think much about the context. But those who weren't present will see it as oddly out of place and insensitive, even if that wasn't the intent. "I'm in a photo with the president!" is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most people and they get caught up in the moment.
If the Obama photo you shared was from a visit after a massacre, we'd be talking apples to apples which makes me curious. Because I just don't see him as the type to smile for a group photo during such an event. I suppose he might, it just seems a bit out of character. What is that context of the Obama photo?
I highly doubt these were fake hospital employees, but I do understand why people might speculate on that. Maybe because we don't think we would jump in a smiling photo with the president in the aftermath of another mass murder with a gun, so it's hard to see why anyone would. Especially care givers.

(62,444 posts)Why "especially care givers"?
These are people who are SUPPOSED to maintain emotional distance between themselves and the circumstances with which they are dealing.
If they were going to get emotionally involved in every situation that comes into the ER all day long, they'd last, what, a day?
If something awful happens to me and I end up in an ER, I don't want some dipshit getting upset about whatever happened to me - I'm going to want professional competent care for my condition. Acting morose is not therapeutic for anyone.
Someone feels a need to attack medical professionals taking a moment out of their work day to have some pictures taken, or to feed into the "fake medical people" bullshit. If these people want their pictures taken with a celebrity, that's their business, and they don't deserve being called out by strangers promoting conspiracy theories.

(24,653 posts)Or how they have to emotionally compartmentalize? I'm the type that has left practices because I prefer doctors who get my weird sense of humor and can laugh when it's grim. I've been a volunteer trauma counselor deployed to natural disaster zones and we (care givers and affected alike) laughed our asses off at times. I get it.
I didn't say it was fair to care givers, but I routinely run across these misconceptions. They are incredibly common. I'm going for understanding here, not acceptance. I happen to agree with you as I plainly stated. But I've found that educating people rather than blasting them gets through faster and more effectively.
I'm an ally here on this point, not an adversary. Just using a different tactic.
