Duck and Cover
Written on August 30, 2012
Tonight, Mittens will officially ascend to the Holiest of Holies in the GOP and will humbly accept his partys nomination to be the Man Who Will Lose to Obama. David Bender joins us tonight to recap the Ryan rally cry and discuss the partys post-election plans.
Ryan really rammed it home last night to the Teabaggers, delivering everything from Biblical imagery of mans creation in Gods image to a vow to never duck the tough issues. Uh, I guess that doesnt include laying out a clear, honest policy on the plan for Medicare restructuring, or releasing tax returns, or denouncing Obama fiscal policies that Ryan actually embraces.
When not raging about ducking tough issues, Ryan was able to squeeze in some real whoppers about the current President, as reported in the Christian Science Monitor:
RYAN: And the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly. So they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama.
THE FACTS: Ryans claim ignores the fact that Ryan himself incorporated the same cuts into budgets he steered through the House in the past two years as chairman of its Budget Committee, using the money for deficit reduction. And the cuts do not affect Medicare recipients directly, but rather reduce payments to hospitals, health insurance plans and other service providers.
In addition, Ryans own plan to remake Medicare would squeeze the programs spending even more than the changes Obama made, shifting future retirees into a system in which they would get a fixed payment to shop for coverage among private insurance plans. Critics charge that would expose the elderly to more out-of-pocket costs.
RYAN: Said Obama misled people in Ryans hometown of Janesville, Wis., by making them think a General Motors plant there threatened with closure could be saved. A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: I believe that if our government is there to support you this plant will be here for another hundred years. Thats what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didnt last another year.
THE FACTS: The plant halted production in December 2008, weeks before Obama took office and well before he enacted a more robust auto industry bailout that rescued GM and Chrysler and allowed the majority of their plants though not the Janesville facility to stay in operation. Ryan himself voted for an auto bailout under President George W. Bush that was designed to help GM, but he was a vocal critic of the one pushed through by Obama that has been widely credited with revitalizing both GM and Chrysler.
Oh, theres more. Jonathan Bernstein over at WaPo has this as well:
It was, by any reasonable standards, a staggering, staggering lie. Heres Paul Ryan about Barack Obama:
He created a bipartisan debt commission. They came back with an urgent report. He thanked them, sent them on their way, and then did exactly nothing.
They. Them. Them. Those words are lies. Because Paul Ryan was on that commission. Came back with an urgent report. That is a lie. The commission never made any recommendations for Barack Obama to support or oppose. Why not? Because the commission voted down its own recommendations. Why? Because Paul Ryan, a member of the commission, voted it down and successfully convinced the other House Republicans on the commission to vote it down.
Get used to the doublethink and Newspeak, Truthseekers. The GOP will rail against Obama for cutting social spending while advocating cuts in social spending. Weve got about 10 more weeks of this mind-reeling madness before we can return to the normal level of inanity.
Join Mike LIVE with David Bender at 9PM ET for these and other stories from the far-flung fringes of the Flying Monkey Right! 877-996-2556

(10,419 posts)Clint's 82 and the little I heard sounded like he's a rambling old man.
I hear Dina (his much younger wife) pushes him out for things like her "reality show".
Sad.

(10,419 posts)About 35-40 years his junior. They have a young daughter, 10 or younger.
I couldn't believe Clint would agree to this baloney. Maybe he is getting, well...
I hate this line of thought, because I want to believe the aged can remain sharp and self-determining. I may disagree with Clint's basic "conservatism" but I never thought he was part of this racist, cruel cult.
Sad face.

(10,419 posts)Clint's mom lived well into her 90s and was apparently alert and lively until the end. I always thought Clint himself would be one of those I could agree to disagree with on political issues.
But now I just feel - ugggghhhhh.......

After some more news about Jan Brewer's endorsement gaffe and the Sally Kohn article published by foxnews.com of all places and ATTACKING PAUL RYAN!

(32,034 posts)As a lawyer, Goldman brings unique legal insight to progressive talk radio. He needs more affiliates (so far he's on even fewer stations than Mike Malloy!)
I first learned about the supposedly progressive 1956 Republican platform when Ed Brayton, author of the Dispatches from the Culture Wars blog, brought it up in Feb. 2010. The following year, Thom Hartmann did a mock CPAC keynote address for his RT TV show The Big Picture adapting parts of the 1956 (R) platform, complete with canned audience and boos.
